William B. Bates papers

The William B. Bates papers contains correspondence and photographs documenting his life and career as a lawyer. Of particular interest are the scrapbook of newspaper clippings dating back to the 1920s and photographs from World War I and Bates' childhood. The collection consists of 14 boxes, including two oversize boxes, and equals 9 cubic feet. The materials are in fair to good condition.

Memorial Hospital Photograph Collection

The Memorial Hospital Photograph Collection contains 4039 photographic prints and negatives from 1903 to 1976 that chronicle the long history of the Memorial Hospital System (originally Baptist Sanitarium and Hospital). The photographs depict the staff, physicians, personnel, departments, nursing school students, faculty and Lillie Jolly (director), facilities and building construction of the Memorial Hospital System. The earliest dated photograph is the only nitrate negative (P-3387). It depicts Louisville Male High School graduating class of 1903, which includes Roger Jolly. It is in good condition. There is a separate series of about 31 photographs donated by Lela Smith Hickey that depict the nurses, nursing students, physicians, and facilities of Memorial Hospital in 1932, including the operating room supervisor “Birdie” Byrd. The entire collection equals 3.5 cubic feet and includes 7 boxes. Materials are in good condition.

The Texas Medical Center records include TMC charter material, correspondence, committee minutes, interviews and transcripts, photographs and slides, budgetary information, newspapers and clippings, research material for books, surveys, materials related to TMC events and visitors, films and audiocassettes, brochures, architectural renderings, guidebooks and directories, and maps. The materials date from the 1900s to the present. The collection also includes the papers of Mary Schiflett who held leadership positions in the TMC from 1970-2009. The collection has been processed at box and folder level. The material is generally in good condition and consists of 39 cubic feet totaling 93 boxes.

San Jacinto Lung Association records

The San Jacinto Lung Association records include correspondence, legal documents, budgets, tuberculosis statistics, committee reports and minutes, printed materials, scrapbooks, articles, christmas seals, and photographs that document the history, community services, staff and administration of the San Jacinto Lung Association. Most notably, the collection highlights the organization’s public health programs to prevent and control tuberculosis as well as its Christmas Seal fundraising campaigns.

The materials are arranged in three series: Organization Records (1911-1993), Photographs (1895-1969), and Scrapbooks (1924-1974). The collection equals 13 cubic feet (12 document and oversize boxes).The materials are in fair condition. Some items were damaged or lost during the flood caused by Tropical Storm Allison in 2001.

Ruth SoRelle papers

Ruth SoRelle was born in Port Arthur on October 9, 1948. She is known for her work in medical and science writing in Houston. The bulk of the papers cover the decades from 1980 to 2015. She worked at the Houston Chronicle where she covered the AIDS/HIV epidemic in Houston. She also worked at Baylor College of Medicine where her last position before retirement was as chief science editor in the Office of Vice President of Public Affairs. She retired December 31, 2015, although she continues to write. The collection includes photos, plaques, framed objects, clipping books, clipping files, reference and topic files, childhood writings, science and medical articles, reporter notebooks, and clippings from SoRelle's budding career as a journalist at the University of Texas. One notable area of interest are the articles related to the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Houston. These article document the early evidence of the disease in Houston. The collection is in good condition, although some of the news clips are showing signs of degradation from the acid in the newspaper. There are 13 boxes (13 cubic feet).

Thomas R. Cole, PhD papers

The Thomas R. Cole, PhD papers consists of scholarly projects and history of the McGovern Center for Humanities and Ethics in the University of Texas' McGovern Medical School. The papers include articles, journals, monographs, correspondence, notes, transcripts, books, syllabi, DVDs/CDs, Betacam tapes, cassettes, realia, and research primarily chronicling Dr. Cole’s professional career.

The collection contains materials documenting Dr. Cole’s research in gerontology. Dr. Cole’s articles and drafts of these articles are found within the papers and include reviews of his publications. Some of the books Dr. Cole published are also in the collection. There is a significant amount of correspondence between Dr. Cole and his colleagues, publishers, and contributors. There are materials relating to his projects, teaching, and presentations and events. In addition to his role at the University of Texas and in the Texas Medical enter, the collection reflects his involvement in professional organizations, conferences, and events. Small portions of the collection concerns postdocs as well as expenses and contracts. The AV materials and digital media are products of Dr. Cole’s numerous lectures, university courses, talks, and publications.

The subject scope of the collection includes: Gerontology, Aging, Social gerontology, Science and the humanities, Humanities, Civil Rights, and Medical ethics.
