Supine newborn infant with monitoring device

A newborn infant in supine position in an incubator has monitoring device placed on its chest. Umbilical stump is visible. Reverse stamped "Medical Photography Dept., Ben Taub General Hosp., Houston, Texas. File no. 63284, date 10-10-63." Accompanying description identifies photograph as part of the Jefferson Davis Hospital Newborn Services morbidity study. Black-and-white photograph measures 5" x 7".

Staged Cardiac Replacement

Demonstration from 4/7/1969 of cardiac replacement in two stages. First, after a failed attempt at surgical repair of the heart, a Liotta-Cooley artificial heart, Dacron tubes, and a Wada-Cutter hingeless valve prosthesis are implanted as a palliative measure. A donated heart is transplanted in a later surgery. A disposable bubble oxygenator is used. Film has voice over narration by Don Macon and illustrations.

St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital, now known as Baylor St Luke’s Medical Center in CHI St. Luke’s Health Center was established in 1962 by Denton A Cooley. The materials are generally in good condition. The collection contains newsletters, directories and rosters, bylaws, brochures, and 6mm films.

South Main Center Association records consists primarily of South Main Center Association newsletters (issues from 1978 to 1993). The newsletter focuses on urban and economic development, as well as general community events and news regarding local schools and government in the South Main Street Area. Also included are issues of the SMCA “Summit Bulletin” from Feb. to June/July 1990.

The first and last folders contain miscellaneous items. There are various letters of invitation, ranging in date from 1982 to 1992, to attend organizational meetings. These letters are addressed to Elizabeth White at the HAM-TMC library and mention noted guest speakers. Also contained are financial statements and annual reports from ’77, ‘79-’80, ’80-’81, ’81-’82 and ‘86. The first and last folders contain folders which provide information regarding the purpose of the SMCA and letters of invitation to a reception honoring the establishment of the organization.

South Central Academic Medical Libraries Consortium records

This collection contains the records of the South Central Academic Medical Libraries Consortium (SCAMeL) from 1981-2013, with the bulk dating 1981-2004. Many of the records relate to or appear to have been gathered in preparation for the semi-annual SCAMeL Board of Directors meetings. Examples of documents included are bylaws, agendas, meeting minutes, budgets, member surveys, correspondence, and reports from various groups. Also present are data and discussion on various library programs such as interlibrary loan supported by the organization or otherwise of interest to members.

In the early portions of the collection, there is discussion of the rationale for creating the organization, as well as its role relative to other entities. The TALON (Texas Arkansas Louisiana Oklahoma New Mexico) Regional Medical Library Program is frequently referenced.

Coordination of collections and services across libraries is a theme throughout the collection. There are materials regarding topics such as Interlibrary Loan, the Union List of Serials, the Cooperative Acquisitions Program, and the Nonprint Media Catalog. Similarly, a group of records in the second series focuses on the work of the Serials Advisory Committee, Information Resources Committee, and Collection Development Group.

The Sidney Schnur, MD papers document his work as a cardiologist and clinical professor at Baylor College of Medicine. The papers include materials related to St. Joseph's Hospital, St. Luke's Hospital, and a variety of professional organizations. Foremost among these are a number of records relating to the Harris County Medical Society around the time of his presidency in 1972. There are also records from his involvement in the American Heart Association, Houston Heart Association, and other groups.

The collection contains committee and expenditure reports, committee agendas and meeting minutes, other committee documents, publications, and correspondence. There are also surveys, course documents, personnel files, admittance lists, and awards.

While the collection contains some materials dating as far back as 1939, the bulk of the materials date from 1965-1976.

Series I: Oral History Interview

This video is an interview of Elizabeth Vainraub by Armin Weinberg and Sara Rozin about her memories of the Chernobyl disaster and the aftermath. She talks briefly about the personal impact of Chernobyl and the impact to the surrounding area. She also talks about her work surrounding radiation due to the Chernobyl disaster and the RadEFX website which aims to assist those impacted by radiation.

Series I: Lela Smith Hickey Collection

This series contains 31 photographs taken or collected by Lela Smith Hickey while she was a nursing student at Memorial Hospital (Baptist Sanitarium) in 1932. She or her family donated the collection to Memorial Hospital sometime before 1979. Photographs depict nurses, nursing students, hosptial staff, physicians, and facilites of Memorial Hospital in 1932. inventory provides descriptive information and year for each item with the quantity of photographs (in square brackets, [ ]).

The Sara Rozin papers consists of photographs related to Sara Rozin’s work with Dr. Armin Weinberg and radiation effects and events projects in Kazakhstan and Russia. The program was organized mostly through the United Methodist Health Initiative. Three videos (VHS) related to her daughter’s wedding in 1993 were digitized and are stored in the digital collection drive (DCD). The original cassettes were returned to the donor. During the reception a rabbi sang the Chernobyl Song. A clip of it has been extracted and stored with the other video files. The material is in English, Russian, and Hebrew. Collection consists of one box equaling 0.25 cubic feet and contains 202 photographs and digital video files. Digital files are stored in the digital collection drive (DCD).
