This collection consists of an amputation or surgical kit, probably German in origin circa 1938. This collection was originally identified as a U.S. Civil War-era amputation kit. See a note in the control folder from Alethea Drexler, archives assistant, explaining why the kit is not circa 1860s.

A list and description of the items is included in the control folder. The kit includes, knives, saws, needles, probes, forceps, chisels and mallets.

Shelton papers contains issues of Medical Director’s Notebook, biographical data, treasured letters, photos, accreditations, presentations and publications, published and unpublished papers, choice editorials, Texas Surgical Society, Southern Society of Clinical Surgeons, articles of interest, philosophy, hypnosis, intestinal by-pass, GI, breast, and peritoneal dialysis research, and other papers related to the work and research of Dr. Shelton.

The Denton A. Cooley, MD papers consists of the personal and professional correspondence, administrative records, patient information, publications, artifacts, scrapbooks, photographs and ephemera of Denton Cooley, MD. Dr. Cooley was born August 22, 1920 and died November 18, 2016. He was known as an American heart and cardio-thoracic surgeon famous for performing the first implantation of a total artificial heart.

The collection is unprocessed, although a box level inventory created by Dr. Cooley’s staff is available. The bulk of the material is in good shape. Some newspaper clippings are degrading due to acidic newsprint. The collection consists of 184.5 cubic feet or about 185 boxes.

The Luke William Able, MD, (1912 – 2006) collection includes a few photographs and news clippings, the letter from the State Department re: Dr. Able’s receipt of the Silver Star for his service in World War II, and several plaques and desktop awards. The items date from approximately 1945 to 1996.

The Harris County Association of General Practice is a component branch of the American Academy of General Practice and the Texas Chapter of the American Academy of General Practice. Through the diligent efforts of Dr. Lyman C. Blair and others a charter was issued on July 23rd, 1948, thereby establishing the Harris County Chapter.

The collection documents the history of a local medical association and to some extent the attitudes with the field of general practice.

The Paul R. Harrington, MD papers contains reprints and tear sheets, and journal articles. Dr. Paul Harrington (September 27, 1911- November 29, 1980) was an orthopedic surgeon and former chief of surgical services at TIRR. He died Nov. 29, 1980.He was interested in polio and scoliosis. He developed a surgical procedure for the correction of curvature of the spine.

MS 079 the Mylie E. Durham Jr., MD papers consists primarily of an oral interview conducted circa 1985 in the form of a printed transcript and six (6) cassette tapes. Dr. Durham Jr. was a native Houstonian. He was a member of the Harris Country Medical Society, the Texas Medical Association, and the American Medical Association. The collection consists of 0.25 cubic feet (1 box).
