The Friends were incorporated in 1960 to “assist in the development, improvement, and expansion of facilities, services, and functions of the Texas Medical Center Library, and to support its administration. It shall be the purpose of the organization to secure gifts and bequests and provide funds for books, journals, rare books and manuscripts, and whenever possible for library equipment, lectureships, and scholarships, and for any other purpose which would be beneficial to the” Library. The collection was donated by James Greenwood III, who is apparently the son of James Greenwood, Jr., MD, who has a small collection in the TMC Library archives.

Scope and content
This collection consists of the records of the Friends of the Texas Medical Center Library, beginning with the organization's incorporation in 1960. There are materials relating to the Friends Board and administration, fundraising and gifts, events, and publications.
Materials include meeting minutes, financial records, correspondence, invitations, photographs, newsletters, and other administrative records relating to the organization and its operations.
The collection also features an Oral History Project, launched in 2023.
System of arrangement
For the purposes of navigating the collection online, files have been grouped into series. However, the physical folders within boxes have not been re-arranged. An inventory reflecting this order is available upon request.

Materials are mostly in good condition. Some are starting to bend, and there is water damage to a small percentage of the materials.
