Research and Teaching

This series includes research Otto was involved in, including her master's thesis, doctoral dissertation, and ongoing professional work. Also present at materials related to courses she taught at the UT School of Nursing in Houston. Much of that material related to her Historical Perspectives in Nursing class, including background materials she assembled. There are also programs and presentation materials relating to Nursing School anniversaries, where Otto often spoke about history of the School.

Professional Service and Presentations

This series contains materials related to Otto's work in professional organizations, as well as presentations she gave outside the UT School of Nursing. An exception is her involvement in the National League for Nursing--this large set of records is assigned its own separate series.

Organizations included in this series include the Texas League for Nursing, Texas Nurses Association District 9, Sigma Theta Tau, and AMERSA.

There are also materials from presentations she gave in the Rio Grande Valley, Cypress Fairbanks Hospital, the Menninger Clinic, and Memorial Hermann Hospital. Topics include Care of the Elderly, Cultural Diversity, Standards in Nursing, Cancer Care, Clinical Ethics, and Professionalism and Civility.

NLN/NEAC

This series documents Otto's later career work on National League for Nursing committees, particularly with the Nursing Education Advisory Council. Her work on various committees and in other leadership roles is reflected in printed email correspondence, meeting agendas and minutes.

Nursing International Journeys

This series documents Otto's role as Academic Leader for Nursing International Journeys educational trips over a decade from 1985-1995. Typical files contain both background readings on the locations, as well as itineraries and other information specific to the trip.

Florence Nightingale

Focused on Florence Nightingale and extending into other areas of nursing history, this series consists of materials Otto and others collected on their travels, readings, and examples of Otto's use of Nightingale and nursing history in her own work.

Personal

While the materials in this series mostly arrived in boxes labeled "personal," many of them maintain clear ties to her profession. For example, there are items Otto gathered or created based on her own interest in the history of nursing. Such artifacts include historical nursing stamps, bookmarks she created with nursing quotes, and brochures she collected on her travels to places like London’s Florence Nightingale Museum. There are also photographs, correspondence, and awards.

Audiovisual and Digital Media

This series consists of VHS tapes, floppy disks, CDs, DVDs, and flash drives. While the VHS tapes have variety of programs of interest to nursing history or education, the digital media appear to largely contain copies of documents printed and archived elsewhere in the collection.

Annual Reports of the Texas Medical Center Library

This series contains the annual reports and biennium report of the Texas Medical Center Library from 1943 to present. Most recent annual reports and other library publications preserved and available in the library's institutional repository, https://digitalcommons.library.tmc.edu/library_annualreports/.

Series I: Mary Schiflett papers,

This series contains materials from the office of Mary Schiflett, who held leadership positions of Associate Director and Vice President of Public Affairs in the Texas Medical Center in the 1980s and 1990s. Materials include administrative records; committee minutes; public relations material and condensed information on TMC member institutions; correspondence; photographs; TMC budgets, surveys, and logistical information; interviews; TMC history; news items; and information on TMC events.

Series III: Historical materials,

This series contains materials related to the history and origins of the Texas Medical Center. Materials include charter, board of directors’ records, administrative records, TMC Hamilton hospital study, correspondence, construction records, brochures, printed materials, maps, annual reports, news items, and event materials.

Series V: Photographs,

This series contains photographic materials that document the development of the Texas Medical Center and the growth of its member institutions. A significant portion of the series covers the 2006 photo contest and images of outdoor art installations.

Series VI: Audiovisual materials,

This series contains audiovisual materials that depict the Texas Medical Center throughout its history. Some productions are promotional videos highlighting TMC institutions and facilities. Materials include reel-to-reel audio, audio cassettes, video, and film.

Series I: Directories

Scope and Content Note: This series includes faculty and student directories from UT Dental Branch, Texas Dental Journal Directories and Houston District Dental Society Directories. The materials are excellent condition. 2.5 cubic feet (5 boxes).

Series III: Photos

Scope and Content Note: This series includes photographs of students, faculty, committees and University of Texas Dental Branch buildings. More photographs are located in the oversized series. The materials are excellent condition. 1 cubic feet (2 boxes).

Series V: Yearbooks.

Scope and Content Note: This series contains yearbooks for the University of Texas Dental Branch ranging from 1928 to 1989. The materials are in good condition and equals 1 cubic foot (2 boxes).

Series VI: Oversized Items.

Scope and Content Note: This series contains large items such as floor plans, elevation drawings and photographs of the dental students, dental assisting students and dental hygiene students. The materials are excellent condition. .25 cubic feet (1 box).

Jefferson Davis Hospital Emergency Room Logbooks

This series contains Logbooks from the Emergency Room at Jefferson Davis Hopsital dating from 1939 to 1970. There are three sub-series: Emergency Room Admissions and Dismissals Logbooks, Emergency Room Logbooks Recording Descriptions, and Emergency Room Trauma X-Ray Logbooks.

Hospital Register and Payment Logbooks

This series contains Hospital Registers and Payment Logbooks dating from 1919 to 1965. There are four sub-series: Houston Municipal Hospital Patients' Register Logbooks, Jefferson Davis Hospital Admissions/Unit Numbers Logbooks, Jefferson Davis Hospital Admission and Dismissals by Division Logbooks, and Jefferson Davis Hospital Payment Books.

Jefferson Davis Hospital Baby Logbooks

This series contains Baby Logbooks from Jefferson Davis Hospital dating from 1940 to 1969. There are four sub-series: Labor and Delivery OB Admissions Logbooks, Premature Nursery Logbooks, Admissions and Dismissals Newborn Nursery Logbooks, and Newborn and Transitional Nursery and Admissions and Dismissal Baby Logbooks.

Patient Records

This series contains 53 boxes of patient medical records. Each patient is assigned a number, and the files are arranged according to these numbers. Note: some boxes are numbered 7A, 7B, 7C, etc., which is why the highest box number is 34, even though there are 53 boxes in the series.

Printed Materials

This series contains printed materials ranging in date from 1957 to 2009. Included are annual reports, telephone directories, employee handbooks, budget information, and an eligibility procedure manual. There are also newsletters such as The Beat and Progress, as well as other printed material relating to the Harris County Hospital District.

Series I: Newsletters,

This series contains the Doctor's Club newsletter titled Memos that document events and people of the Doctor's Club.

Series II: Organizational Records,

This series contains the brochures, menus, correspondence and photographs that document the history, activities and members of the Doctor's Club.

Series IV: Sculptures by Robert Portus,

This series contains the sculptures by Robert Portus. Originally from Los Angeles (Born: 1925), Robert Portus was a metal fabricator and artist producing metal sculptures in the San Francisco Bay Area in the 1960s and 1970s. He later moved to Grants Pass, Oregon where he died in 2009. (ObitTree. Series I: Organization Records,

This series is comprised of correspondence, legal documents, budgets, tuberculosis statistics, committee reports and minutes, printed materials, newsletters, medical articles, and Christmas Seals that document the history, community services, and administrative functions of the San Jacinto Lung Association. Also included are items such as a pamphlet for a pinning ceremony at Prarie View A&M School of Nursing and the Texas A&M telephone directory.

Series II: Photographs

This series consists of photographic materials that document the history, staff, facilities, events, community services and Christmas Seal campaigns of the San Jacinto Lung Association in Houston. The photographs document the history of public health and anti-tuberculosis programs of the 20th Century in the United States.

Series XII: Photographs

This series includes photographs, slides, and photographs document SCC/MLA members, annual meetings, and events. Some image files are on CDs between 1994-1995, 2010 and may be inventoried with other digital material. Series also contains EBSCO tote bag and Shreveport 2003 mug.

Addendum 2017: Treasurer Files of Dawn Field, Bylaws Committee Files, and other official documents

This series primarily contains Treasurer Files and Bylaws Committee Files along with other official documents. The Treasurer Files include financial records, registration forms and payments, expenses reports, budgets, bank statements, tax records, and conference records created in the fulfilling the duties of the office of Treasurer for SCC/MLA. The series also includes accounts for 2012 SCC/MLS conference in Lubbock, TX, which were kept in two binders. Original order was maintained, and the files have a chronological order. A flash drive was also included with content related to 2011 Baton Rouge meeting. Flash drive housed in Digital Media (DM) section and inventoried with other digital materials. The Dawn Field treasurer files range in two periods of time 2012, 2014-2016. The Bylaws Committee Files include correspondence, procedure manual documents, member lists, bylaws, reports, committee goals and objectives, website printouts, and meeting minutes. Other official documents include minutes, Executive Board files, and business meeting documents.

Addendum 2018: Kathy Kerdolff Files, MLA Oral History Committee Interviews, and other documents

This series primarily contains the files of Kathy Kerdolff documenting her leadership and committee work for SCC/MLA and MLA Oral History Committee Interviews. Kathy Kerdolff Files include annual meeting documents, website, reports, minutes, procedure manuals, fundraising documents, and financial records. The series also contains interview transcripts conducted for the Medical Library Association Oral History Committee. Other materials included are meeting brochures, reports, meeting minutes, manuals, directories, and official documents.

Series II: Undigitized Films

This series contains film reels and elements that have not been digitized. It consists of film projection prints, work prints, soundtracks, camera-original footage, and outtakes.

Series II: Newsletters,

This series contains HIV Treatment Alerts and RITA! (Research Initiative, Treatment Action) newsletters published by The Center for AIDS: Remembrance and Hope Project.

Series I: Photographic Prints,

This series consists of biographical files, subject files, article files, and oversize that document developments, events, issues, news, and personalities in medicine from 1955-1988. Many of the images were used in issues of the Medical World News. There are reproduced photographs in the biographical files and subjects files that pre-date the publication with content as early as 1904. These images were mostly provided by other agencies to illustrate an article or medical news item. Images dated before 1960 are assumed to be reproductions. Biographical files are organized in alphabetical order by name. Subject files are organized in alphabetical order by subject term. Article files are organized in numerical order by the article number assigned by the publisher, which is generally chronological order. Oversize materials are organized by article number with unnumbered items at the end. The inventory provides subject or article title, photographer (if available), year or issue date. The series totals 255 boxes and 8 oversized boxes and equals 133.5 cubic feet.

Series II: Photographic Negatives,

This series consists of the raw photographic footage and copy negatives produced by staff and freelance photographers for Medical World News articles. Materials include black & white 35mm negatives, 4x5 format negatives, and 120/220 format negatives. There are 8,309 folders of negatives organized by negative identification number assigned by the publisher, which is generally in chronological order. The inventory reflects the information provided on the original envelope, containing negative identification number, subject, photographer, editor or writer, film formats and quantity of each format (in box brackets), and date of footage. This series totals 155 boxes and equals 77.5 cubic feet.

Series III: Slides and Transparencies,

This series consists of color 35mm slides as well as medium and large format transparencies that were created for feature and cover stories of the Medical World News. There are 165 folders of transparencies organized alphabetically by subject. The inventory reflects the information provided on the original box of materials, including subject, credited photographer (and agency if applicable), formats - quantity (in box brackets), possible issue date (if available), and year. The series totals 10 boxes and equals 5 cubic feet.

Series IV: Cover Stories,

This series contains article drafts, source materials, interview transcripts, interoffice memos, visuals, and other materials related to specific cover stories in Medical World News. The inventory provides article title (in quotations), author, part number of total folders (in parenthesis), types of materials in folder, and issue date. This series has materials related to 12 cover stories between 1978-1979 and totals 4 boxes, equaling 2 cubic feet.

Series I: Menninger Publications

Scope and Content for Series I: Menninger Publications: This series includes staff publications and articles from professional and general publications, including typed articles submitted for publication, copies of published articles alone and within publications, copies of news articles and publications, copies of printouts of Menninger Clinic website content. The series has been minimally processed and is described only at box level. The materials are in excellent condition. 37 cubic feet (73 boxes).

Series III: Oversize Materials and Medical Realia

This series contains oversize materials and medical realia that document the Menninger Clinic and the Menninger Clinic Library. The condition of the materials ranges from excellent to poor. Many of the tools and metal objects are in good to excellent condition. Some of the leather is in a state of decay. The collection includes numerous sharps (reusable needles, glass syringes and containers) and several sealed mercury instruments.

Series IV: Addendum,

Scope and Content for Series IV: Addendum contains materials added to the collection after the initial processing. Materials include obituraries, photographs, alumni directories, and printed materials related to Karl Menninger and the educational programs of the Menninger FOundation. The series equals one cubic foot (2 boxes).

Museum Publications

This series consists of one box of materials published by the John P. McGovern Museum of Health and Medical Science, including museum newsletters, marketing materials for exhibits, and invitations to/programs for events regarding the museum and other affiliates.

Medical Equipment Artifacts

This series consists of seven antique medical equipment artifacts, such as electrocardiograph machines, microscope slides with specimens, an ophthalmoscope, thoracoscope, and Dr. John P. McGovern's personal medical bag containing a range of medical tools, first aid supplies, and medicine.
