Helen Fred

Contains the family photos of Helen Fred, her girlhood and motherhood, with her children, grandchildren, friends and synagogue associates, followed by photos of her Marks parents, siblings, and grandparents.

Subseries IX: Peer-reviewed Medical Articles;

Contains correspondence, research data, sources, and other documents, photos and slides used by Dr. Fred to write his many peer-reviewed medical articles. Some of the files in this subseries are RESTRICTED due to the inclusion of patient names. Consult an archivist for access.

Subseries IV: Academic and Other Professional Honors;

Includes papers related to most of Dr. Fred's medical institutional awards, professional society honors, and student tributes in many different media formats: text, photo, video recording, ephemera, and realia. Oversize certificates of fact and ephemera and all realia in this subseries have been separated to OVERSIZE. Smaller ephemera and photos remain in the individual folders along with correspondence, event programs, invitations, guest lists, celebration planning documents, and travel arrangements and receipts.

Subseries III: Forms Used By Dr. Fred To Manage Running Races;

Contains blank lap sheets for collecting race performance statistics; completed lists of equipment and travel items repeatedly used by Dr. Fred during races or while travelling to them; and the names and addresses of members in Dr. Fred's running club in Houston.

Letters To H. Fred;

Contains letters and cards to Dr. Fred from his medical colleagues and students about academic opportunities and appointments, recommendation requests, acknowledgements and birthday wishes, and congratulations on his many achievements.

Subseries XI: Radiation Testing, Marshall Islands

Scope and Content Note: This subseries contains correspondence, research, publications, news clips, and other records collected by Dr. Schull about the effects of radioactive fall-out from the BRAVO (also Castle BRAVO) nuclear bomb test, March 1, 1954, on Japanese sailors on the fishing boat, Fukuyru Maru, and Marshallese residing on Rongelap, Rongerik, Alinginea, and Utirik atolls. These papers are arranged at a box level using Tier 1 Processing. They are in good condition and remain in the original binders and order received from Dr. Schull.

Subseries XII: News Clips And Other Non-Scholarly Articles

Scope and Content Note: This subseries contains news clips and other non-scholarly articles about the ABCC/RERF collected by Dr. Schull. The ABCC/RERF Translation Office translates Japanese press articles into English and sends them to ABCC/RERF senior executives and staff. This subseries contains translated and untranslated news clips. News clips from both Japan and the United States are included. The Japanese news media interviewed senior ABCC/RERF executives such as George B. Darling and Dr. Schull. Transcripts and news clips about interviews are included here. News clips are organized by the name of the newspaper and then by date order.

Subseries I: Official Publications

Scope and Content Note: Scope and Content Note: The ABCC and RERF authored a number of monthly and annual periodical publications to convey information. These publications include: Annual Reports-a complete summary of operations from July 1 to June 30; Technical Reports-the results of original research from scientific investigations; Research Protocols-approved scientific procedures to be used in investigations; Commentary And Review (RERF only)-replaced the Technical Report series; RERF Update-news publications containing non-scholarly lbs about the organization; RERF News Letter-internal news for employees. The sub-series is organized by the type of publication and then by date.

Subseries VIII: Research Data

Scope and Content Note: This subseries contains interoffice memorandums, papers, and other records that cover statistics about the health effects of the atomic bombs compiled during ABCC/RERF research. Notes on each folder descrlbe the location of the papers prior to their removal from the original binders. Some of the folders are RESTRICTED due to the presence of patient names. Consult an archivist for access.

Subseries IX: Research Protocols

Scope and Content Note: This subseries contains interoffice memorandums, papers, graphics, drafts, and other records about ABCC/RERF scientific investigation procedures. Research protocols were peer reviewed and formally approved before a study could be proceed. The records contain evidence of this process. The majority of these records are in good condition.

Subseries D: Publications

This subseries contains university publications. It includes handbooks for topics in teaching, handbooks for predental advising, student guides for the school and programs of study offered by the school, library resource guides and Brochures. It also includes The Special Patient, Post graduate manuals and video tape catalogs. The materials are in excellent condition. 2.5 Cubic feet (5 boxes).

Subseries II: Illustrations; 1949 - 1969

Scope and Content Note: This series contains original artwork used inside The Cancer Bulletin journal issues to illustrate stories and articles. The title of the article is used as the title of the illustration if it is located on the title page of the article, if not then a literal description of the illustration is used as its title. The name of the artist for each illustration is included in the descriptions if known.

Letters From H. Fred;

Some materials are restricted in Box 4.

Contains letters from Dr. Fred to his medical colleagues and students about academic opportunities and appointments, medical student recommendations, acknowledgements and birthday wishes, and congratulations on their achievements.

Subseries II: Career Roles;

Contains correspondence, contracts, periodicals, and news clippings about some of Dr. Fred's academic appointments along with academic material used by him and other institutional ephemera.

Subseries III: Medical Society Memberships;

Contains correspondence, membership certificates, and photos about some of Dr. Fred's medical society memberships. Larger certificates have been separated to Oversize. Photos, when available, remain in the folder about a membership.

Subseries VII: Academic Papers Presented by Dr. Fred for Medical Education ;

Some material in this subseries is RESTRICTED due to the use of patient names. Consult an archivist.

Contains most of the presentation texts, slides, and photos used by Dr. Fred for teaching medical students, residents, and doctors. The subseries is arranged by the date the presentation was conducted. Because the presentations occurred in many different medical seminars, universities, and medical schools, the folders also contain correspondence about scheduling and compensation, acknowledgement notes, travel arrangements and expense receipts. Material in a folder is in the orgininal order received from Dr. Fred. The material has been processed to remove staples and paper clips, rehouse slides in archival plastic, and copy and discard newsprint. Photos of a presentation have been left in the folder. Folders are labeled with the name of the organization for which Dr. Fred conducted the presentation, the title of his presentation in "quotes", the location of the presentation, and the date of the presentation. Individual folders containing material with restricted access are marked RESTRICTED in red ink.

Subseries VIII: Photos and Slides Used For Medical Images and Memorable Cases Education;

Most material in this subseries is RESTRICTED due to the use of patient names. Consult an archivist.

Contains medical case slides and photos used by Dr. Fred for teaching medical students, residents, and doctors as well as in his books. As much as possible, the subseries is arranged by the dates on the slides; many slides are undated. Dr. Fred kept the slides in three ring binders and slide carrels. The slides have been removed from their original containers. The original order and grouping has been preserved: i.e. one folder equals one slide carrel or one binder. The slides have been resleeved in archival sleeves; each slide remaining in original order. Damaged or empty slides have been left in place as Dr. Fred left them. Where appropriate, folders are labeled with their function and the date range of the slides. Individual folders containing material with restricted access are marked RESTRICTED in red ink.

Subseries XI:Student Appreciation;

Contains a drawing and autographed periodical presented to Dr. Fred by his students in appreciation of his medical teaching. Also contains separation sheets for the many larger realia presented to Dr. Fred by appreciative students. These items are located in Oversize.

Subseries V: Administration

Scope and Content Note: This subseries includes interoffice memorandums, reports and other records about the administration of the ABCC/RERF collected by Dr. Schull. Administration of the ABCC/RERF included such functions as budgeting and capital funds, legal and contractual issues, staffing, salary administration, record keeping for employees, research statistics maintenance, information technology including the organization of medical data bases to support research, employee recognition, public relations, printing and publishing, and employee and community social activities. The records concern operations in Hiroshima, Nagasaki and Kure. The records are organized by creation date earliest first. Dr. Schull kept his Department of Genetics papers in three ring binders. The papers have been removed from the binders due to flood damage. The original order and notebook tabs have been preserved. Many of these papers have substantial flood damage.

Subseries VI: Oversized Materials;

Scope and Content Note: This subseries contains leaves from a Hermann Hospital scrapbook as well as some content sheets of the Hermann Hospital construction and the finished revisions.

Subseries VI: Running Statistics;

Contains correspondence, photos, diaries, race statistical records, and runners' rankings used by Dr. Fred to manage his running career and document his running achievements.

Subseries VII: Running Race News Clips;

Contains news clips about a few of the races that Dr. Fred participated in; most of these news clips contain no mention of Dr. Fred specifically. One folder contains clippings of articles that were interviews of Dr. Fred about his running life. The original newsprint paper has been preserved as it was generally in good condition at the time of processing. Dr. Fred saved these news clips in his papers but did not place them in specific race folders so they have been arranged together in this subseries.

Subseries IX: Running Race Realia and Ephemera;

Contains information about the race realia received from Dr. Fred as well as two folders of text items, photos, color slides, and other ephemera that Dr. Fred labeled "Track" and placed in a folder with the same name. Some material in these two folders is RESTRICTED due to a medical case history about a named individual runner. Consult an archivist. Race realia has been moved to OVERSIZE; separation sheets describing the realia and its location in Oversize can be found in the folder.

Subseries I: Family Papers;

Contains personal correspondence, birth and death certificates, passports, homestead deeds, and other business records for five generations of the Fred and Marks families. The subseries "Family Papers" is divided into three sub-subseries by individual: Herbert L. Fred, his spouse and children; Izzy Fred and his parents and grandparents; Helen Fred nee Marks and her parents and grandparents. Within a sub-subseries, the material is arranged by correspondence from the family member and to the family member, in alphabetical order by recipient or sender; then by certificates of fact concerning the family member, in order by date; followed by other papers about his or her education, rites and ceremonies, business affairs, and accomplishments, in order by date.

Isie Fred

Contains the family photos of Isie Fred, his boyhood and manhood, with his wife, children, grandchildren, friends and business associates, followed by photos of his Fred parents, siblings, and grandparents.

Subseries XII: Non-Peer Reviewed Medical Publications By and About Dr. Fred;

Contains non-peer reviewed interviews and articles with and about Dr. Fred. The majority of the information is text in the form of news clips. One audio cassette tape of an interview with Dr. Fred is included. Newspaper clips have been copied and the original newspaper discarded during processing due to degradation of the material.

Subseries I: Running Correspondence;

Contains correspondence in the form of typed and handwritten letters, cards, and postcards to and from Dr. Fred's running colleagues. The subseries begins with correspondence to Dr. Fred and ends with correspondence from Dr. Fred. The subseries is organized in alphabetical order by correspondent, one folder for each correspondent. Envelopes if present remain with the accompanying correspondence. Photos if present remain with the accompanying correspondence.

Subseries II: Atheletic Honors;

Contains a few of the race certificates received by Dr. Fred and application information about an athletic honor he earned. News clips and periodicals have been copied and discarded. Photos remain with the original material. Honors are arranged by the date received.
