The notebooks from Dr. Knobil's research laboratories comprise the largest series (X). General Files, Series IV, contains material including correspondence, lectures and speeches from the early 1980s to 2000. It was retained in the alphabetical order it was received. Material in Series II was labeled Harvard and deals primarily with Dr. Knobil's tenure at Harvard University in the 1950s. Material about his Deanship of the University of Texas Medical School at Houston can be found in Series III and IV.

Griff Ross, MD oral history scrapbook

The Griff T. Ross, MD, oral history scrapbook was compiled by Stanley Joel Reiser, MD, MPA, PhD. Dr. Reiser is the Adjunct Professor, The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, School of Public Health, Austin Regional Campus; and the University of Texas Austin Plan II Honors Program. Dr. Reiser donated the scrapbook in March 2014. The scrapbook contains a bibliography of Dr. Ross’s works and an oral history interview of Dr. Ross. The scrapbook also includes interviews with Bill Ross, Griff Ross’s brother; Dr. Carlson (given name unknown); Dr. Alton Steiner, and Dr. Ernest Knobil. The scrapbook was actually a binder filled with loose sheets of 8.5 inch by 11 inch paper. The binder has been removed and discarded. The collection consists of 0.25 cubic feet (1 box).

The Griff Ross, MD papers contains two bound volumes of the 1984 oral interview transcript with Dr. Ross. The first volume contains Dr. Ross's interview; the second contains interviews with four of his colleagues. In the interview, Dr. Ross discusses both his personal and professional life.The collection consists on one box equaling 0.25 cubic feet. Materials are in good condition.

Interview with Dr. Louis Faillace

This Digital Audio Tape (DAT) contains an interview with Louis A. Faillace, MD, founding Chair of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and onetime Acting Dean at the University of Texas Medical School in Houston. The interview took place on September 29, 1995. The interviewer is unnamed, and the recording runs 1:24:37.
(0:01) Louis A. Faillace, MD recounts being recruited to the faculty of the University of Texas Medical School in Houston by Dr. Cheves Smythe. He relays his emphasis on biological psychology. He highlights the opportunity he saw in building a new school of medicine, contrasted with the challenges he encountered. He discusses Hermann Hospital, Dr. Smythe, the recruitment of faculty—some of whom he deemed “tigers”—and local and state political structures impacting the school. He laments the passing of Frank Erwin, who he claims “protected” school and its interests.
(14:40) He discusses Cheves Smythe, Bob Tuttle and Roger Bulger. He also traces with the development of Psychiatry at UT Houston, including the acquisition of more beds and funding.
