Dental Ads from San Diego Union and ephemera

This collection contains ads, newspapers and other ephemera associated with San Diego and dental practice. The pages from the San Diego newspaper date from October 1912 and contain both ads and articles related to dental practice. The comic books are from 1974 and are of Doctor Strange and Action Comics featuring Superman. The drug advertisements range from the early 20th century to the 1970’s. One lithograph titled ‘The Lost Tooth’ by artist Chas A. Maclellan from the 20th century. There are several French dental related prints from the 18th century. Also there are early 19th century prints from London related to medical equipment and animal teeth structure. A set of acupuncture charts with labels in both English and Chinese. A large hanging ink drawing of primitives filing teeth to points is in moderate condition due to being stored folded for an extended period of time. A dental patent from 1869 for artificial teeth includes drawings of the apparatus and an official seal.

The collection is comprised of flat paper objects with a range of media and paper substrates. Objects date from the 18th century to the 1970’s. Overall the collection is in stable condition. The newspaper is acidic but in fair condition. The large hanging drawing is the most delicate object within the collection and should be handled with care and not folded. The collection takes up approximately 1.5 cubic feet (1 box and 1rolled object).

This a publication titled "AIDS Practice Manual: A Legal and Educational Guide"; third edition, published in 1991 by the National Lawyers Guild AIDS Network in conjunction with AIDS Law Project of Pennsylvania, Gay Men's Health Crisis, and Whitman-Walker Clinic. This publication covers core materials, personal and financial matters, discrimination, criminal justice, child welfare and custody, federal policies, and other topics. The publication is bound in a hard-back binder and is in excellent condition. Collection equals 0.5 cubic feet (1 box).

Hurricane Katrina nursing stories

Dr. Sharon K. Ostwald, PhD, RN, FGSA, donated these recordings of nurses experiences in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, which devastated New Orleans, and Hurricane Rita. Many of the accounts are from nurses who responded to the flood of refugees from New Orleans after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina in August 2005. The City of Houston opened the George R. Brown convention center to the refugees. This collection consists of 5 CDs, 2 DVDs, 2 microcassettes audio tapes, three digital videocassettes, and release forms for some of the speakers. The material is in good condition.

Visiting public health nursing uniforms

The Visiting public health nursing uniforms collection contains visiting public health nursing uniforms used in the 1960s. The uniforms are one piece dresses with sleeves and skirts above the knee made from polyester-cotton. Each has a matching beret. One uniform is dark blue and one is light blue. Both uniforms are in good condition, although the light blue uniform has sweat stains under the armpits. Both uniforms were donated by Adrian Melissinos, RN, PhD, a Houston resident.

The uniforms are one piece dresses with sleeves and skirts above the knee made from polyester-cotton. Each has a matching beret. One uniform is dark blue and one is light blue. Both uniforms are in good condition, although the light blue uniform has sweat stains under the armpits.
