Sara Rozin papers

The Sara Rozin papers consists of photographs related to Sara Rozin’s work with Dr. Armin Weinberg and radiation effects and events projects in Kazakhstan and Russia. The program was organized mostly through the United Methodist Health Initiative. Three videos (VHS) related to her daughter’s wedding in 1993 were digitized and are stored in the digital collection drive (DCD). The original cassettes were returned to the donor. During the reception a rabbi sang the Chernobyl Song. A clip of it has been extracted and stored with the other video files. The material is in English, Russian, and Hebrew. Collection consists of one box equaling 0.25 cubic feet and contains 202 photographs and digital video files. Digital files are stored in the digital collection drive (DCD).

Thie Kiyoko Minato papers includes a letter, newspaper article photocopy, meeting minutes. Kiyoko Minato gave this collection of papers to Merry Uemoto to send to Dr. William Schull. Included are meeting minutes at the fourth ABCC/RERF History Forum in Nagasaki library, which was an interview of Ms. Kiyoko Minato and Ms. Hisae Tanaka about their time working as nurses for the ABCC, as well as a newspaper article about Philip Montgomery from the Chugoku newspaper. Ms. Uemoto discusses the two previously mentioned documents and discusses the cancellation of a meeting between Dr. Schull and Ms. Minato due to her health in a letter included in the collection. The newspaper article and meeting minutes are dated April 4th and 9th 2015 respectively, and the letter is dated November 8th, 2015. The collection contains one folder in the Small Manuscript Collection (SMS) box.

The collection equals 3 cubic feet (4 boxes). Majority of collection will be submitted digitally. First ZIP file was emailed on 9/7/2016. Dr. Weinberg was issued a flash drive (HRC_32_01) to submit other ZIP files at one time. All files submitted to the collection are placed in the digital control folder in the Digital Submissions directory. He was a resident of Houston by 1917 and resided at 1907 Baldwin St. with his wife Alice Virginia Rehrauer. This collection contains copies of his military service, large format photos of faculty and students from the Texas Dental College in 1914 and 1916. Also included is a scrapbook. The materials are in good condition, although one of the photos shows lots of silvering caused by a poor photo printing process. The collection contains materials documenting Dr. Cole’s research in gerontology. Dr. Cole’s articles and drafts of these articles are found within the papers and include reviews of his publications. Some of the books Dr. Cole published are also in the collection. There is a significant amount of correspondence between Dr. Cole and his colleagues, publishers, and contributors. There are materials relating to his projects, teaching, and presentations and events. In addition to his role at the University of Texas and in the Texas Medical enter, the collection reflects his involvement in professional organizations, conferences, and events. Small portions of the collection concerns postdocs as well as expenses and contracts. The AV materials and digital media are products of Dr. Cole’s numerous lectures, university courses, talks, and publications.

Ruth SoRelle was born in Port Arthur on October 9, 1948. She is known for her work in medical and science writing in Houston. The bulk of the papers cover the decades from 1980 to 2015. She worked at the Houston Chronicle where she covered the AIDS/HIV epidemic in Houston. She also worked at Baylor College of Medicine where her last position before retirement was as chief science editor in the Office of Vice President of Public Affairs. She retired December 31, 2015, although she continues to write. The collection includes photos, plaques, framed objects, clipping books, clipping files, reference and topic files, childhood writings, science and medical articles, reporter notebooks, and clippings from SoRelle's budding career as a journalist at the University of Texas. One notable area of interest are the articles related to the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Houston. These article document the early evidence of the disease in Houston. The collection is in good condition, although some of the news clips are showing signs of degradation from the acid in the newspaper. There are 13 boxes (13 cubic feet).

The Paul Lensky, MD Photograph Collection contains 27 black and white photographs, each about 3.25" x 4.5" in size. The snapshots depict Dr. Lensky's friends and colleagues at Jefferson Davis Hospital on Buffalo Drive in Houston, Texas. While most photographs appear to be set in Houston, at least one was taken in Monterrey, Mexico. The photographs are dated 1947-1948, corresponding with Dr. Lensky's time at Jefferson Davis.

Scenes include roof top views, sunbathing, cars, the Nurses' Home, the hospital entrance, a neighborhood and home, and travel. Some of the roof top views show the surrounding area, including the San Felipe Courts housing development, the Fourth Ward, Buffalo Drive and Buffalo Bayou, and downtown Houston. Descriptions--including names and dates--provided by the creator are on the back on each photograph.

This collection includes photographs, manuscripts, and reprints related to Dr. John Bowers' involvement with the Atomic Bomb Casualty Commission (ABCC). Of particular note are 58 black-and-white photographs of Nagasaki, Japan, taken by Captain Shields Warren (MC) in 1947. There is also a photograph showing Dr. Bowers alongside Carl Tessmer reviewing plans for the ABCC laboratory-clinic in Hiroshima, and another featuring the groundbreaking of the Radiation Effects Research Foundation (RERF). A third set of photographs depicts Berlin, Germany during the Cold War.

In addition to photographs, this collection includes two manuscripts by Dr. Bowers--one on the history of the ABCC and one on RERF. Finally, there are three reprints of articles by Dr. Bowers and his colleagues.

The collection primarily consists of video recordings, television scripts, and interview transcripts of Dr. Duke’s popular nationally and internationally syndicated television programs, “Dr. Red Duke’s Health Reports”, “Body Watch”, and “Life is Difficult” from 1987-1998. These materials illustrate his valuable contributions as a television host, engaging and educating both the public and the medical community through live medical consultations, surgical procedures, and international teleconferences.

In addition to these various audiovisual materials, the collection also contains correspondence, photographs, slides, lecture outlines, research, and presentations concerning emergency medical services, trauma response, and disaster relief. These materials are related to the American Trauma Society, the Life Flight program, and the Disaster Relief and Emergency Medical Services (DREAMS) project, all of which were co-founded and/or pioneered by Dr. Duke.

Other materials in this collection include award, recognition, and honoree plaques and certificates; meeting minutes, correspondence, agendas, conference proceedings, and reports for Memorial Hermann Hospital; personal and professional legal documents, tax returns, and receipts; commencement speeches; article reprints; and documents/correspondence concerning Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, Hermann Eye Center, EMS Task Force, University of Texas Southwestern Medical School Alumni Association, National Forest Foundation, Texas Parks and Wildlife, Boone and Crockett Club, and the Harris County Medical Society.
