The Beta Beta Houston records contains correspondence, ephemera, photos, scrapbooks and some realia that document the history of the Beta Beta Houston Chapter #648 at Texas Women's University (TWU), Region 6 of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing. The date range of the materials range is 1969-2011. The collection consists of 17 boxes equaling 17 cubic feet.

Texas Woman's University (TWU), College of Nursing began in the fall of 1954, received accreditation from the National League of Nursing in May 1958. Beta Beta Chapter was officially recognized as a chapter, by TWU, in October 1969. The inaugural inductions were held the spring of 1970. The mission of the organization is to support the learning knowledge, and professional development of nurses committed to making a difference in health worldwide. The society vision is to create a global community of nurses who lead in using knowledge, scholarship, service and learning to improve the health of the world’s people. Surgical Treatment of Ventricular Septal Defects: Technique & Results in 292 Cases

Summary from 1961 of techniques used in surgical treatment of ventricular septal defects, including demonstration of pediatric surgery. Two treatment techniques are demonstrated: suture and Dacron patch graft prothesis. A pump oxygenator is used. Film has voice over by Don Macon and illustrations by Barbara Tuttle.

Cardiac Valve Replacement Using An Improved Prosthesis

Demonstration circa 1966 of replacement of cardiac valves using the SCDK-Cutter double caged valve prosthesis. Surgeries use disposable bubble oxygenators and replace mitral or aortic valves. Statistics on surgeries for 250 patients are provided. The film has voice over narration by Don Macon and illustrations by Herb Smith, Kathleen Norris, and Robin Hanson.

Surgical Treatment of Atrial Septal Defects

  • Discussion and demonstration from 1963 of surgical treatments for atrial septal defects. For a pediatric patient, sutures are used
  • for one adult and one child, Dacron patch grafts are implanted. Both surgeries use pump oxygenators. The film has voice over narration by Don Macon and illustrations by Barbara Tuttle.

Cardiac Monitoring in the Prevention and Treatment of Catastrophic Arrest

Discussion circa 1953 by Denton A. Cooley and an anaesthesiologist of cardiac arrest during surgical treatment of patients, with information on both prevention and treatment. Primary treatments include heart massage and ventilation. Some elements are illustrated with surgery on a dog. Film has voice over by Don Macon.

Cardiovascular Surgery in the First Year of Life

Demonstration dated 07/07/1979 of palliative surgery in infants with congenital heart disease. Because full surgical correction with cardiopulmonary bypass is too risky for infants, palliative surgery is performed. Conditions and treatments discussed include tricupid artresia potts anastomosis, transposition of the great vessels and creation of atrial septal defect, patent ductus arteriosis suture ligation, coarctation resection and anastomosis, congenital aortic vacsular ring division of couble aortic arch, ventricular septal defect pulmonary artery banding, and aortic stenosis valvotomy with modified caval occlusion. Statistics on patients and outcomes are included. Film has voice over narration by Don Macon.

James E. Barkley Pharmaceutical Collection

Scope & Content: James E. Barkley is a retired pharmacist and pharmaceutical salesman who worked for the Wellcome company. In the course of his career, Mr. Barkley collected numerous antique bottles of medicine. The collection contains bottles with medicine dating from the late 1800s.

Most of the bottles contain pills, but some bottles contain liquids. Bottles of liquid are stored in archival-quality plastic bags.

Visiting public health nursing uniforms

The Visiting public health nursing uniforms collection contains visiting public health nursing uniforms used in the 1960s. The uniforms are one piece dresses with sleeves and skirts above the knee made from polyester-cotton. Each has a matching beret. One uniform is dark blue and one is light blue. Both uniforms are in good condition, although the light blue uniform has sweat stains under the armpits. Both uniforms were donated by Adrian Melissinos, RN, PhD, a Houston resident.

The uniforms are one piece dresses with sleeves and skirts above the knee made from polyester-cotton. Each has a matching beret. One uniform is dark blue and one is light blue. Both uniforms are in good condition, although the light blue uniform has sweat stains under the armpits.
