It contains biographical information, personal and professional correspondence, lectures, certificates and awards, topical research files, newsclippings, photographs, audiovisual materials, collected books and publications, and other realia that detail the personal life, professional activities, and leadership of James H. Steele during his time at the Centeres of Dissease Control and Prevention, as a professor at the University of Texas School of Public Health in Houston, TX, as Assistant Surgeon General, and his retirement. The materials are in good condition.

The Jane H. Preston, MD papers contains tapes, interview transcripts, questionnaires, correspondence, patient information, publications, and other various papers related to the work and research of Jane Preston in psychiatry and telemedicine.

The Ferid Murad, MD papers consists of fifiteen handwritten notebooks documenting Dr. Ferid Murad's research. The notebooks include research data presented in tables and charts, as well as Dr. Murad's notes. The notebooks span the years 1959-1970. The first set of notebooks (#1-12) corresponds to his doctoral and medical studies at Western Reserve University, which concluded in 1965. The second set (1-11) pick up in 1967.

In addition, the collection includes a small number of printed materials from organizations of which Dr. Murad was a part. Notably, there are manuals from his internship and residency at Massachusetts General Hospital, dating around 1965. The Information for House Staff manual includes handwritten notes. The only two items dating from after 1970 are are a guide from the Stanford Institute of Biological and Clinical Investigation and a National Academy of Sciences membership directory.

The William O. Russell, MD papers contains personal papers, professional papers, and financial documents related to the life and career of William O. Russell, such as correspondence, meeting minutes, reports, oil leases, farming leases, statistical reports and research. The collection documents Dr. Russell's education, post-graduate medical training, pathology practice, cancer pathology, ranch and ranching activities. The collection also contains records related specifically to the Russel Ranch, including families genealogy with historic and contemporary farm information. Geographic coverage within the collection includes Texas, California, Utah, Florida as well as his work at MD Anderson Cancer Center. The date range of the materials is 1939-1997. The collection chronicles Dr. Russell's many roles in society, including family man, rancher, medical professional, pathologist, member of medical study groups, and medical executive.

The Daniel L. Creson, MD, PhD papers contains information about Dr. Creson's professional career primarily from the mid-1970s to the early 2000s. Personal correspondence and writings comprise the main portion of the first series. The second series contains information about the history of mental health facilities and providers in Texas, primarily from the early 1900s through the 1980s. Calendars in the third series document his professional meetings and some personal events. Series 4 contains material used in classes, lectures and seminars taught by Dr. Creson as well as information about programs he coordinated. Information about his membership in professional and other organizations is provided in Series 5. Series 6 contains manuscripts as well as reprints of some of his publications. Dr. Creson's humanitarian work is documented in some detail in Series 7 and includes photographs of many of his trips abroad for this purpose. Series 8 has documents about his consultancy work for legal purposes.

Kanellos D. Charalampous, MD papers contains reel-to-reel audiotapes of lectures for a course in social and community psychiatry with presentations by Titus Harris, Jack Ewalt, John Spiegal, Harry Brickman, Samuel Braun, Betty Caldwell, Eli Bower, David Sanders, Phyllis Rolfe Silverman, and other pioneers in psychiatry. There is also a reel of participant discussions. The collection consists of 17 boxes equaling 8.5 cubic feet of labelled tapes.

These audiotapes record lectures given in Houston, Texas as part of the course in Social and Community Psychiatry that was headed by Gerald Kaplan of Harvard University in association with Baylor College of Medicine, Moody Bettis as local contact. The audiotapes comprise 3 1/2 years worth of lectures, given around the United States at different gathering points. Harvard University acquired a grant to support these lectures, which took place between 1968 and 1972. Each lecture series comprised two weeks of instruction. many of the lectures were pioneers in psychiatry. Titus Harris and Jack Ewalt are among the notable speakers. Some lectures, for instance Charles Jones, CEO of Exxon, spoke on executive and management issues.

The David Paton, MD papers contains correspondence, minutes, drafts, legal records, course descriptions, memos, legislative/government documents (a Bill proposal and several drafts), institutional publications, handwritten manuscripts, pamphlets, reports, newspapers, university documents, and one monograph regarding Dr. David Paton’s life and professional endeavors.

The papers of Dr. Henry Renfert are made up mostly of personal letters from his time in the Navy during and after World War II, letters from the time of his residency training in between tours of duty, and official paperwork regarding his time in the Navy and Navy Reserves. Most of the material dates from between 1944 and 1954, with a few exceptions.

The collection also contains some miscellaneous items such as budget lists, bills, novelty poems, newspaper items about Renfert, Sr., and Dr. Renfert’s military medals.

This collection consists of six boxes. Three are of technical reports from the Atomic Bomb Casualty Commission (ABCC) dating from 1959 through 1975 and a few RERF reports from the 1980s and early 1990s. Box VI is an oversized box containing two large photographs and two large certificates. The reports have been organized in chronological order and all materials have been interleaved with archival bond. The rest of the material consists primarily of professional correspondence between Dr. Belsky and various other doctors regarding ABCC research or, occasionally, individual patients. There are some drafts of ABCC technical reports and a few articles copied from other publications. Correspondences, etc., are arranged in general chronological order in Boxes IV and V.

The bulk of the Raymond D. Pruitt Papers consists of original manuscripts and/or copies of his professional and personal writings. A bibliography compiled from his curriculum vitae, documents in the papers and a PubMed search is provided. The major portion of his published and non-published documents cited in the bibliography are in this collection. Also included are photographs used in some of the printed articles and correspondence about some of his writings.

Personal material includes original correspondence and photographic negatives from his year at Oxford University. Copies of some of Dr. Pruitt's medical records are in the collection. A reflex hammer and stethoscope labeled with his name. Some personal remembrances of his youth, college and university life are included in letters and printed material.

Studio photographic portraits of various sizes are included in the collection. Diplomas, awards and commendations are also included. There are several folders which contain information about his tenure as an officer and as President of the American Osler Society.

There is information about the establishment of the Mayo Medical School and its beginning years. Included in the letters is correspondence about his decision to leave Baylor College of Medicine to undertake that endeavor. Copies of many publications which covered the origin of the School are included.

The Murray M. Copeland papers contains reprints, illustrations, interview by Don Macon transcription, Roswell Park Memorial Institute memorial display, biographical information, publications, and Johns Hopkins background. Collection consists of 2 boxes totaling 1 cubic feet of reprints and other printed materials.

The papers of John P. McGovern document his medical career, the creation of the McGovern Allergy Clinic, his editorial and writing leadership, and his founding assistance and support for the American Osler Society. Dr. McGovern was energetic in leading many medical associations, promoting humanism in medicine.

The John Earl Cutler, MD papers contains 5 ledgers and some loose business-related papers, including two ledger books in which Dr. Cutler recorded patient fees and fees he paid to suppliers. The ledgers cover the years 1918 to 1922. Dr. Cutler recorded the names of his patients and the companies that paid for his services. He also recorded the drugs dispensed and the cost. He rarely mentions symptoms, which he treats. There are some loose receipts for repairs to Dr. Cutler's Franklin automobile and purchases from drug wholesalers. This collection is relatively good shape although the binding of each ledger has been partially destroyed by insects and aging. The paper is in good condition with some foxing and insect damage. The collection consists of about 1 cubic feet (1 document box and 1 oversize box). Two of the ledgers measure 9 inches by 14 inches by 1.5 inches.

The Joseph Merrill, MD papers consists of meeting minutes, real estate negotiations, surveys, biographical information, and interview transcripts that document the career of Dr. Merrill in internal medicine and pediatrics. The A.M. Autrey, Jr., DDS, collection is made up of a dental cabinet, a print of Sir Luke Fildes’ painting The Healing Brotherhood, and an array of medical and dental implements dating from approximately the late 19th through the early 20th centuries. Most items are undated.

The Luke William Able, MD, (1912 – 2006) collection includes a few photographs and news clippings, the letter from the State Department re: Dr. Able’s receipt of the Silver Star for his service in World War II, and several plaques and desktop awards. The items date from approximately 1945 to 1996.

This collection includes newspaper clippings, medical license update cards, copies of journal articles and book chapters, and other material relating to women in medicine, and female doctors in Texas in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

The collection consists of two boxes. The bulk of the material in the collection is related to the U.S.-U.S.S.R. collaborative study on the effectiveness of d-Penicillamine in treating juvenile arthritis. Box I contains correspondence among Dr. Baum and other doctors, dating from 1974 through 1984 and organized chronologically by year. Box II contains other materials related to the d-Penicillamine study, including accounting reports, sample patient evaluation forms, travel information and itineraries, drafts of the project proposal, and progress reports.

The Harris Busch papers is a conglomeration of reprinted research conducted by Dr. Harris Busch and his colleagues. The reprints are bound into volumes according to year. Dr. Busch's research was conducted at a variety of institutions including the Department of Medicine, Biochemistry, and Pathology at Yale University; University of Wisconsin Madison; and the Department of Pharmacology at University of Illinois. However, most of his research in the collection was conducted at the Department of Pharmacology at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, where he was Professor in the Department of Pharmacology. He would conduct research regarding cellular metabolism, cancer, toxicology, and pharmacology within the Department of Pharmacology at Baylor College of Medicine from approximately 1962-1997. This collection includes: publications, reports, research, reprints, and patents.

Dr. Bernard M. Barrett studied at the University of Miami for his medical degree. His collection documents his involvement in editing and coauthoring different research, books, and articles. The collection includes several edited drafts by Dr. Barrett and his colleagues' drafts he would edit. The most prominent collection of documents surrounding the publication of the book and its editions, "Patient Care in Plastic Surgery," is well documented in the collection. The collection also includes: pamphlets; reports; reprints; correspondence; letters; memos; research; advertisements; and financial records.

The Harold Lynwood Warwick MD papers features newsclips, correspondence, letters, manuscripts, reprints, diagrams, blue prints, and photos documenting the personal life and professional career of Dr. Harold Lynwood Warwick. The collection includes documentation detailing the Dr.Warwick's military career. Most of the collection chronicles Dr.Warwick's recording device invention that he dedicated over eighteen years of his life. Dr. Warwick appears to primarily work in the field of Otolaryngology, or Ear, Nose, and Throat diseases.

Miles, MD papers include his black bag, medicines in glass bottles, one carte-de-visite and two cabinet cards depicting Miles, diplomas, surgical instruments, medical tools, and some papers. The collection is generally in fair condition. The black leather bag is brittle. The photographic images are in excellent condition. The surgical tools show some rust. The medicines in glass vials have degraded. 1 cubic foot (1 box). 1880-1908.

This is a genealogy collection centered on William S. Halsted, an American surgeon, 1852-1922. The materials are mainly photocopies or journal articles, book chapters or handwritten notes regarding Williams S. Halsted and his lineage and descendants. The collection consists of 1 box (0.5 cubic feet). The collection is in good condition.

This collection contains ads, newspapers and other ephemera associated with San Diego and dental practice. The pages from the San Diego newspaper date from October 1912 and contain both ads and articles related to dental practice. The comic books are from 1974 and are of Doctor Strange and Action Comics featuring Superman. The drug advertisements range from the early 20th century to the 1970’s. One lithograph titled ‘The Lost Tooth’ by artist Chas A. Maclellan from the 20th century. There are several French dental related prints from the 18th century. Also there are early 19th century prints from London related to medical equipment and animal teeth structure. A set of acupuncture charts with labels in both English and Chinese. A large hanging ink drawing of primitives filing teeth to points is in moderate condition due to being stored folded for an extended period of time. A dental patent from 1869 for artificial teeth includes drawings of the apparatus and an official seal.

The collection is comprised of flat paper objects with a range of media and paper substrates. Objects date from the 18th century to the 1970’s. Overall the collection is in stable condition. The newspaper is acidic but in fair condition. The large hanging drawing is the most delicate object within the collection and should be handled with care and not folded. The collection takes up approximately 1.5 cubic feet (1 box and 1rolled object).

Norman E. Mann medical realia collection is considered an artificial collection. Records indicate that Dr. and Mrs. Norman E. Mann donated the Mann medical regalia collection to the John P. McGovern Historical Collections and Research Center in April of 2001. This collection contains a wide range of objects including: medical instruments, medicine bottles, medical equipment, human remains, dental ads and ephemera, and printed material. The collection was heavily damaged by Tropical Storm Allison and the recovered objects vary in condition. Additional material has been added and continues to be added to the collection to supplement the objects lost due to Tropical Storm Allison.

The collection contains two hyfrecator machines from the 1940’s-1950. These machines are in relatively good condition and have all of the needed parts. A large doctor’s bag and its contents are also included within the collection. The bag and its contents are in fair condition. The bag contained many medicine bottles and packaging. This packaging is of notable ephemeral interest. The collection contains many medical instruments in varying conditions. As the objects are mostly metal and have undergone a flood, rust is present on many of the objects. Some objects are also incomplete. A few medical instruments cannot be identified due to a lack of completion. Several pacemakers are included within the collection and are in good condition. There are also four leather medical boxes containing medicine vials. The medicine vials are empty for the most part and in good condition. The leather boxes are fragile and exhibit leather rot. Glassware and antique glasses are also included. The glass objects are in good condition but should be handled with care. Enamel ware is also included within the collection consisting of funnels, bedpans, and instrument trays. Several microscopes can be found within the collection. Most of the microscopes are antique and oversized. There are many other oversized objects within the collection including a hospital toilet, a stereoscope, and an examination chair. Additionally, human remains in the form of gallstones and a radius bone are found within the collection. Overall the collection contains a large range of materials.

Physical Description: Collection consists of 14 document boxes and artifacts inventoried in the Garments, Artifacts and Framed section (GAF). The entire collection is comprised of artifacts and medical realia.

This collections consisted of a black medical bag as well as medicines and medical tools that were apparently owned by A. G. Boss Brown, M.D. from Bosworth, Missouri. The materials range from good condition to very poor condition. As of January 2022, the bag itself is no longer part of the collection, and its disposition is unknown. There are 22 remaining envelopes of objects.

This collection consists of the papers of Martha Pugh, MD, who practiced Neurology at Baylor College of Medicine. The materials are generally in good condition. The collection includes correspondence, official papers from Baylor College of Medicine and other institutions and other materials, including an EMG machine. The collection is 2.75 cubic feet (2 boxes and one large machine).

This a publication titled "AIDS Practice Manual: A Legal and Educational Guide"; third edition, published in 1991 by the National Lawyers Guild AIDS Network in conjunction with AIDS Law Project of Pennsylvania, Gay Men's Health Crisis, and Whitman-Walker Clinic. This publication covers core materials, personal and financial matters, discrimination, criminal justice, child welfare and custody, federal policies, and other topics. The publication is bound in a hard-back binder and is in excellent condition. Collection equals 0.5 cubic feet (1 box).

This collection consists of assorted papers both personal and professional. The papers were removed from a large collection of books donated by Jim Warren and designated as the John R. Byers [book] collection. The papers include personal correspondence, numerous advertisements for medical tools and drugs, prescriptions, Lake Forest University's Rush Medical College materials, and a few Masonic-related papers. The materials are from primarily from the Midwest in the United States. The content's date range are from 1891 to 1951.

The Frank Arnett, MD papers contains materials covering the professional career of Dr. Frank Arnett, MD. The collection includes medical objects, video, photographs of Dr. Arnett and colleagues, awards and recognitions, copies of presentation material, and grants awarded information. A large portion of the collection is composed of reprints of Dr. Arnett's numerous publications, most on the genetics and genomics of multiple rheumatic diseases. The collection also includes realia, such as two of Dr. Arnett's white coats and other objects. This collection is in good condition and consists of 7 cubic feet (11 boxes).

The William H. Ellett Atomic Bomb Casualty Commission papers includes a 1945 topographical map of Nagasaki used in planning the atomic attack and a 1946 topographical map of Hiroshima that was used by the international damage assessment group. The collection also includes an unpublished manuscript of ABCC history written by John Z. Bowers, a former ABCC staffer. Ellett also included his personal copies of the "Life Span Study" reports. The size of the collection is one cubic foot (2 boxes and two oversize maps).

The Vernie A. Stembridge, MD papers contains professional papers, military records, reprints, administrative records, correspondence, awards, photographs, realia, oversized materials, personal papers, artifacts, yearbooks, textbooks, monographs, printed materials, memorabilia, ceritifactes, artwork, and audiovisual materials. The collection documents the life and career of Dr. Vernie Stembridge who was a leader in the field of pathology. The collection chronicles his medical education and training at University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, U.S. Public Health Service Hospital in Norfolk, Virginia, the Oak Ridge Institute of Nuclear Studies, Oak Ridge, Tennessee as well as his leadership positions and consulting work at Parkland Memorial Hospital of Dallas, Southwestern Medical School, Southwestern Allied Health Sciences School, the Dallas Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Baylor University Medical Center, Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas, and the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. Notable personal materials within the collection include Dr. Stembridge’s projector, plague, gavel, and Tiffany sterling silver bowl. The collection equals of 28 cubic feet and contains 26 boxes, including 3 oversized boxes. The materials date from 1945 to 2000. The materials are in good condition.

This collection consists of an amputation or surgical kit, probably German in origin circa 1938. This collection was originally identified as a U.S. Civil War-era amputation kit. See a note in the control folder from Alethea Drexler, archives assistant, explaining why the kit is not circa 1860s.

A list and description of the items is included in the control folder. The kit includes, knives, saws, needles, probes, forceps, chisels and mallets.

The Thomas Matney papers, MS 146, includes materials from 1926 through 2011 relating to Dr. Matney’s research in genetics, Dr. Matney’s teaching materials, and his research as a community activist into the support and well being of at-risk children. Dr. Matney was the first associate dean of the newly formed UT Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences as well as a professor of genetics and environmental science and a student advisor. Professor Matney made important contributions to scientific understanding of cancer-causing agents and the genetic mechanisms that underlie the development of cancer.

This collection contains eleven series: I. Personal Papers; II. Administrative Papers III. Business Correspondence; IV. Publications; V. Research; VI. School and Community Research Projects; VII. Teaching Materials; VIII. Student Files; IX. Travel; X. Realia and Ephemera; and XI. Audiovisual Materials. This collection contains much of the research conducted by Dr. Matney as well as his teaching materials. One of the highlights of this collection is the research proposals and papers from Dr. Matney's time with the Atomic Energy Commission along with a letter from Dr. Schull of the RERF to Dr. Matney when he was ill. Another highlight of the collection is the Temperature Gradient Plate, a device invented by Dr. Matney.

The materials in this collection are in good condition with some minor tears and brittle paper. Mrs. Nancy Matney donated Dr. Matney’s collection of personal and business correspondence, photographs, newspaper articles, pamphlets, diplomas, awards, artwork, a scrapbook, yearbooks, journal articles, abstracts, contracts, applications, research notes and notebooks, lecture notes, audiovisual material, ephemera, and realia to the John P. McGovern Historical Collections and Research Center in January 2011. The collection is 10.5 cubic feet (thirteen boxes) and is collection 146.

The Otto Lowenstein papers contains correspondence and articles that were found in the "Collections & Reprints" by Otto Lowenstein, which is in the McGovern Rare Book collection. This collection consists of one folder with handwritten correspondence and notes, photos of electrical equipment, graph paper with tables about pineal body functions. The materials are in German and English and date from 1932 to 1933. The collections equals 0.25 cubic feet (1 box).

The Richard S. Ruiz, MD, papers, MS 150, includes materials from 1925 through 2007 related to the Hermann Eye Center and Memorial Hermann Hospital. Dr. Ruiz was the Chief of Ophthalmology at Hermann Hospital who built up and improved the teaching faculty at Hermann Hospital and the one with the vision for the Hermann Eye Center and made it possible. This collection encompasses this period of time in Dr. Ruiz's career. Dr. Miller donated his collection of journal articles, newspaper articles, business correspondence, photographs, architectural blueprints, and a scrapbook to the John P. This material comes the Stanley family medical supply business, which operated in the Houston area. J. Richard Stanley donated the items. There are two items in this collection both of which are basal metabolism testers from 1937 and later. This material covers the years circa 1937-1950s. This material was sold through the Stanley family medical supply store in Houston. This collection pertains to medical equipment used for testing basal metabolism in humans. This material was in the possession of the family as part of store inventory and later as personal possessions.

The Alan Cooper, MD papers document his career in psychiatry and mental health education in Houston, Texas. The collection includes syllabi, course materials, and correspondence relating to various classes and seminars. In addition, there are administrative publications from the Texas Department of Mental Health and Mental Retardation. The materials date from the mid-1970s to the early 1990s.

This collection consists of three pages from a scrapbook and 23 photos depicting scenes in Hiroshima and staff members of the Atomic Bomb Casualty Commission (ABCC). This scrapbook may have belonged to Louise Cavagnaro, RN, who was a nurse with the ABCC in Hiroshima in 1948, when many of the pictures were taken. Cavagnaro donated her ABCC papers to the Texas Medical Center Library. Those papers seem to have been integrated into other collections or into the ABCC photo collection. These scrapbook pages were found in the archive without any descriptive data or record. All photos are provided with clear captions except for a photo of Cavagnaro, who is known through other photos that she donated to the archive. Each page measures 11 inches by 14 inches.

This collection consists of three encased ambrotypes. The primary subject is most likely Marion Matkin who served as an assistant surgeon in 15th Arkansas Infantry according to his gravestone located in Oakwood Cemetery, Tarrant County. One of the images depicting Dr. Matkin is in excellent condition. One image of Matkin and a second man has broken glass and obvious degradation. The third image of a woman, who may be Matkin's wife Louisa Olivia Garrett, is dark and appears over exposed. Images appear to be dated circa 1850 to 1865. According to the document, this collections consists of reproductions of engravings which first appeared as "illustrations to Maladies Mentales,an early 19th century work on mental patients and their care...." Jean Étienne Esquirol published this work after observing mental patients at the hospital in Charenton, France. Wyeth Laboratories in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, produced the prints in 1963. Manuscript (MS) 159, The Herbert Fred, MD Papers, is a collection of papers related to Dr. Fred's medical career and personal life in five self-defined series: Medical, Running, Writing, Family, and Religious. Herbert Leonard Fred, MD was born in 1929 in Waco, Texas. He is known for his contribution to medical education. He is an award-winning clinician, diagnostician, and professor of internal medicine. In keeping with the beliefs of Sir William Osler, Dr. Fred, an emeritus American Osler Society member, centered his medical practice on the patient, championing the use of the mind and five senses to develop medical diagnoses.

Dr. Fred studied at Rice Institute from 1946 to 1950, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine from 1950 to 1954, and University of Utah Hospitals from 1954 to 1957. After service in the United States Air Force, he returned to Houston, Texas where he joined the faculty of Baylor University College of Medicine from 1962 to 1969. Ensuing academic appointments included: University of Texas Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences from 1968 to the present; Director of Medical Education, St. Joseph Hospital from 1969 to 1988; The University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston from 1971 to the present; Rice University from 1979 to 2002; and HCA Center for Health Excellence from 1988 to 1993.

The papers are in excellent condition. Documentary forms consist of correspondence, certificates of fact, scholarly presentations, scholarly article reprints, school boy essays, real estate deeds and titles, judicial decrees, news clips, portrait and event records. Formats include text; visual works in photographic, slide, pastel chalk, and pencil; audio works in video and audio on compact disc and magnetic tape along with award and gift realia. Dr. Fred collected images of disease conditions and symptoms throughout his career to use for medical education. The collection contains an extensive color slide collection of medical images, many of rare conditions. These slides are in fragile condition and some have faded beyond recognition. Extensive papers relating to Dr. Fred’s parents and grandparents from the Fred and Marks families in Waco, Texas are in the Family Series and contain some information about Waco and or Texas history. Geographic locations to which the records pertain are Waco, Amarillo, and Houston, Texas; Baltimore, Maryland; Salt Lake City, Utah; Europe and China. While most of the collection is open to public use, some folders and the medical images have restricted access due to patient confidentiality. With a date range from 1890 to 2013, the collection consists of 112 cubic feet in 88 boxes plus several realia objects in the Oversize collection.

The D.H. Rankin Medical Artifacts Collection was donated by Dr. Rankin, a family physician in Austin, Texas. Dr. Rankin had a personal interest in hearing related devices and early twentieth century quack medical devices. Dr. Rankin acquired artifacts from online auction sites, auction houses, and catalogs. Receipts and sale information for some items are included in the control folder.

Highlights of the collection include bloodletting tools, vibratory quack medical devices, drug bottles with original medicines, and alcohol prescriptions during the United States prohibition era.

The collections of materials are dated from 1700 through 1950. The bulk of materials are from the late nineteenth to early twentieth century. The materials are predominantly from the United States with a few outliers from Great Britain, China, Mexico, and Denmark.

The collection totals 36 cubic feet and 20 boxes. Many objects are oversized and thus not stored in any box. The majorities of artifacts are stored in their original boxes and complete with promotional material where applicable. The condition of objects are, on average, very good. Damage is usually only present on the original boxes. Drugs and liquids have been saved and are stored separately in water tight bags. Care should be taken when unpacking boxes and unwrapping items as some items are sharp and/or have mechanical blades.

This collection consists of one small photo binder containing 56 photos measuring about 5 x 3.5 inches. There are also several loose photos that are roughly 6.5 x 4.5 inches as well as 8.5 x 5 inch photos. The Methodist Hospital Diagnostic Clinic implosion video is a digital recording of the 15-story Diagnostic Clinic on June 25, 2006. The building was located at 6448 Fannin St. between Main St. and Fannin St. at the intersection of M.D. Anderson and Fannin in the Texas Medical Center. The building was imploded to make way for a new 1.6 million square foot outpatient center for The Methodist Hospital. This digital video runs 38 second with audio. The video has a running title of TMH Implosion 06.25.06. The format is Windows Media Audio/Video file (wmv). The size of the file is 2.50 MB. The frame width is 640 pixels and the frame height is 480 pixels. The frame rate is 30 frames per second. The audio has a bit rate of 166 kbps with 2 stereo channels and an audio sample rate of 44 kHz. This copy of the video was created in July 2006. The creator of the original file is unknown. This collection consists of two oversize illustrations created by Bill Andrews, who was a medical illustrator active in the Texas Medical Center. The two illustrations in this collection are intended to be humorous and are related to the winter holiday season. The first illustration is titled "Biological Luminescence in Reindeer" copyrighted in 1986. It measures 32 inches wide by 15.5 inches tall. The second illustration is titled "Comparative Anatomy of the Fruitcake" copyrighted in 1995. It measures 24 inches wide by 21 inches tall. Both illustrations are printed with a brown ink. The fruitcake anatomy suffered some water damage and most of the text is readable. The reindeer illustration is in good shape.

MS 166 Fleischmann's Compressed Yeast and Good Health pamphlet is a product of the Fleischmann Company. Published in 1919, the pamphlet presents compressed yeast as a Household Remedy for many ailments from pimples and boils to constipation and wasting diseases. This 26-page pamphlet was published by the The Fleischmann Company in New York. It measures 4.5 inches by 6.75 inches. The four-color cover is still rich with color. MS 167 Doan's Directory of the United States pamphlet is a product of the Foster-Milburn Co. located in Buffalo, New York. Published in 1932, the pamphlet gives the population of cities in the U.S. as listed in the 1930 U.S. census. The pamphlet also includes testimonials, history, medicinal uses of Doan's Pills and other Doan products. This 34-page pamphlet was published by the Foster-Milburn Co. located in Buffalo, New York. It measures 5.5 inches by 8 inches. The pamphlet has a two-color cover. The pamphlet is in the early stages of becoming brittle. “The Mystery of Compassion” is #4 of a series of six autobiographical lectures entitled “Compassion and the Art of Medicine” given between 1991 and 1995 by Dutch author and longtime Houston resident Jan de Hartog. Mr. de Hartog and his wife, Marjorie, were involved in the expose of the poor conditions at Jefferson Davis Hospital in the early 1960’s, that led to the creation of the Harris County Hospital District. Mr. de Hartog’s professional papers are housed at the University of Houston M.D. Anderson Library Special Collections, ID 1967-002. A single VHS tape produced in 1993 by Baylor College of Medicine Media Productions. It measures 1.5 x 4.75 x 8 inches, has a black-and-white label, and is in good condition.

The Jane E. Johnson's Texas Children's Hospital nursing papers, 1953-1954, includes two photographs showing the new Texas Children's Hospital in 1954, a letter from 1953 confirming that Jane Johnson has been hired as a "charter member" of the nursing staff, a paper stub from 1954, and an undated news clipping mentioning the firing of staff at the hospital. The materials were donated by Jane Johnson and delivered to the archive by Brenda Thompson, a friend and, as of 2013, a member of the nursing staff at Texas Children's Hospital. The materials are in good condition, although the news clipping is showing yellowing form the acid in the paper. This collection consists of one folder.

The William J. Schull Photograph Collection, MS 170, contains photographic prints, positive and negative transparencies, and text ephemera from Dr. Schull's career and many international travels as a global scientific research consultant in the effects of radiation and human genetics and connoisseur of the world's cultures. Dr. Schull collected and preserved all of the material in this collection in the course of his professional career and private life from 1945 to 2014. The images and text reflect Dr. Schull's appreciation for each land's beauty and the uniqueness of its people, crafts, architecture and attire along with the many friends he cultivated in every place he worked. The collection is organized by geographic location in loose archival photo and slide sleeves or in scrapbooks. Geographical areas represented include Japan, Europe and The Middle East; Latin American and South America; Asia, Australia, and South Pacific countries; and the United States. Usually accompanied by his wife, Vicki Schull, the images capture the many activities of their lives as international travelers and residents in Japan. These images add color and detail to the travel diaries located in MS 67 The William J. Schull, PhD Papers, also in the McGovern Historical Collection. The major theme of this collection is to add an important element of humanity and location to Dr. Schull's scientific career in the form of faces, places, and traditional cultures meeting the new atomic age.

About 50% of the material contains images from Dr. Schull's assignments at the Atomic Bomb Casualty Commission (ABCC) and the Radiation Effects Research Foundation (RERF). A highlight of the collection is the scrapbook given to Dr. Schull by the Emperor of Japan upon awarding him the Order of the Sacred Treasure, Third Class in 1992 for his long and honorable service to the Japanese people. Another scrapbook in the collection contains letters from many of Dr. Schull's peers at the ABCC and RERF commemorating activities in his career.

About 40% of the collection contains images from Vicki and Jack Schull's travels and work in other geographies along with group portrait images of their many friends and family. An important 10% of the collection contains scientific lecture slideshows from Dr. Schull's work in human genetics and the effects of ionizing radiation on human health.

The material in the collection is in excellent condition. Scrapbooks are in their original condition. Other material has been placed in archival photo and slide sheets and foldered in archival boxes.

The material frequently had notes from Dr. Schull that designated the location. Less frequently did he designate dates. During processing, the date printed during development was frequently used to date the material, if available. Otherwise, dates on signs, attire, or auto models, if visible, were used to approximate dates. Country names in brackets, for example [Switzerland], represent the project archivist's best guess as to the location. The Texas Medical Center-Women's History Project contains audio interviews and print transcriptions of the interviews with women who made contributions to the biomedical and health care fields at the Texas Medical Center. Support organizations at the nursing and medical schools of UTHealth, The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, began the project in 2013 with five interviews.

The Emil Steinberger MD papers contains Dr. Steinberger's reprints, which are bound in five volumes, a speech by Dr. Steinberger, a curriculum vitae, and several obituaries. He lived from 1928-2008. The collection consists of 2 boxes equaling 1 cubic foot.

This collection consists of Dorothy Otto's personal and professional papers related to her long career on the faculty of the Cizik School of Nursing at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center in Houston.

The bulk of the collection dates from the founding of the UT School of Nursing in 1972. Dr. Otto's papers include her office files, records of her professional involvement, and some materials reflecting her personal interests. In addition to paper records, there are also a small number of VHS tapes, floppy disks, optical media, and flash drives, as well as artifacts and four large foam presentation boards. The materials labeled "Personal" contain historical nursing stamps she collected, thank you cards and other correspondence, artifacts, and historical nursing quotes Otto made into bookmarks.

Much of the collection documents Otto’s work at the Cizik School of Nursing, as well as the history of the School itself. There are faculty meeting minutes, handbooks, and other records from the School’s early development in the 1970s. Later records include programs and presentation materials relating to Nursing School anniversaries, where Otto often spoke about history of the School.

There is also substantial coverage of Otto’s professional and personal endeavors in nursing beyond Houston. Multiple boxes document her role as Academic Leader for Nursing International Journeys educational trips. Her work on various nursing education committees and in other leadership roles is reflected in printed email correspondence, meeting agendas and minutes.

Otto’s interest in the history of nursing is apparent throughout the collection. There are photocopies of articles and other sources she shared with colleagues or used in preparation for her lectures and speeches. There are also artifacts such as historical nursing stamps and brochures she collected on her travels to places like London’s Florence Nightingale Museum.

There are also copies of Dr. Otto’s master’s thesis and doctoral dissertation.

The Marianne Marcus, EdD, RN papers contain newsletters, publications, research project designs, and other materials related to her work at the University of Texas School of Nursing. Mostly dating from 1998-2008, her papers reflect Dr. Marcus’ interest in substance abuse research and helping prepare nurses to address addiction issues. Much of the collection material relates to her project “Stress reduction in therapeutic community treatment.”

Dr. Sharon K. Ostwald, PhD, RN, FGSA, donated these recordings of nurses experiences in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, which devastated New Orleans, and Hurricane Rita. Many of the accounts are from nurses who responded to the flood of refugees from New Orleans after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina in August 2005. The City of Houston opened the George R. Brown convention center to the refugees. This collection consists of 5 CDs, 2 DVDs, 2 microcassettes audio tapes, three digital videocassettes, and release forms for some of the speakers. The Cheves M. Smythe MD papers, Ms 176, has been arranged chronologically according to titles held, and additional items were placed at the end of the collection. This collection consists of research documents, correspondence, and publications. Highlights of the collection include information from the University of Texas Medical School at Houston. The Collection comprises of 10 boxes and is 9.5 cubic feet. All of the original boxes have been replaced, and the majority of the original folders have been replaced. Overall the collection is in good condition but should be handled with care as many papers are beginning to reflect their age.

The United States Strategic Bombing Survey consists of two pamphlets published in 1946 by the United States government’s Strategic Bombing Survey. There are two titles in the collection: “The Effects of the Atomic Bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki” published 30 June, 1946 and “Japan’s Struggle to End the War” published 1 July, 1946. Both publications are important to understanding some aspects of the Atomic Bomb Casualty Commission. Both pamphlets are fairly good shape although the acidic paper has lost flexibility.

Scope & Content: James E. Barkley is a retired pharmacist and pharmaceutical salesman who worked for the Wellcome company. In the course of his career, Mr. Barkley collected numerous antique bottles of medicine. The collection contains bottles with medicine dating from the late 1800s.

Most of the bottles contain pills, but some bottles contain liquids. Bottles of liquid are stored in archival-quality plastic bags.

Printed paper is the predominant format in the collection though there are numerous black and white and color photographic prints, some objects and other ephemera and an 8mm sound film.

A large portion of the collection is comprised of various scrapbooks. The scrapbooks contain printed material, ephemera, and photographic prints, either taped or pasted on acidic paper that has browned and is brittle. The pages were removed from the scrapbooks, original order maintained, and stored in acid-free folders. In addition to the scrapbooks, the collection contained a large number of newspaper clipping. The clippings have not been arranged and are extremely brittle.

Highlights of the collection include the photo scrapbook, “The Army Life of Irvin Alan Kraft” and the complete records of Dr. Kraft’s military service.

The collection is approximately four cubic feet and contains seven boxes (three cubic foot, four various sizes) and one oversize folder. The materials are in fair to good condition and there are no preservation concerns at this time. The scrapbook pages are stored flat in boxes 4, 5, and 6; take care when removing the folders to preserve original order.

The scrapbook segments and photographs show Leta Denham and other nursing students and school faculty, including class portraits. There is one photograph of the reception room at the nurse's home. There are three images relating to the 1918 flu pandemic, showing the nursing students holding “Quarantined” banners with the year 1918, and a photograph of a faculty member wearing a “Quarantined” sash across her chest. On the back of this photo “Miss Becker play-acting” is written giving the impression that the students are pretending to be quarantined but are not actually ill. Included with the photographs is an image of Mrs. J.P. Burnett (Lillie Jolly), Superintendent (undated). In addition to a nursing cap there is a pin from Baptist Sanitarium and Hospital Training School for Nurses that is in the shape of a cross and has “L. Denham” inscribed on the back. Oversized items include Leta Denham's Registered Nurse certificate from the Texas State Board of Nurse Examiners dated June 28, 1919, and her diploma from Baptist Sanitarium and Hospital Training School for Nurse's dated May 29, 1919. The collection equals one cubic foot and includes two boxes and one oversized folder. The materials are primarily in good condition. Rolled panoramic photographs need conservation consultation to flatten.

The Griff T. Ross, MD, oral history scrapbook was compiled by Stanley Joel Reiser, MD, MPA, PhD. Dr. Reiser is the Adjunct Professor, The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, School of Public Health, Austin Regional Campus; and the University of Texas Austin Plan II Honors Program. Dr. Reiser donated the scrapbook in March 2014. The scrapbook contains a bibliography of Dr. Ross’s works and an oral history interview of Dr. Ross. The scrapbook also includes interviews with Bill Ross, Griff Ross’s brother; Dr. Carlson (given name unknown); Dr. Alton Steiner, and Dr. Ernest Knobil. The scrapbook was actually a binder filled with loose sheets of 8.5 inch by 11 inch paper. The binder has been removed and discarded. The collection consists of 0.25 cubic feet (1 box).

The Carlos Vallbona, MD papers contains correspondence, course materials, slides; files from his 3701 Kirby office; and other material detailing the career of Dr. Vallbona as a pediatrician, educator, advocate, physical therapy and post-polio syndrome specialist. He held positions at Baylor College of Medicine and TIRR. The materials date from between 1968 and 2014. Materials were donated in three stages in 2014 and 2015. Collection consists of 54 boxes equaling 54 cubic feet.

This moulage is Japanese in origin based on the use of hiragana, katakana and kanji characters in the text. The 3-dimensional representation of a human torso depicts various parasites and the foods with which the parasites are associated, including green leafy vegetables, fish and other types of seafood. The moulage was framed with a glass front. However the glass was chemically interacting with the printed text surrounding the moulage. The moulage was removed from the frame, placed in a clear polypropylene sleeve and boxed. The moulage contains its original backing.

Nursing Informatics Project papers contains books, pamphlets, brochures, and manuals detailing nursing informatics from 1962-2012 totaling 267 items. One linear foot of vertical files containing articles, SCAME 1981 NIH Conference notes, and documents about the history of early software for nursing education. Materials collected, preserved, and create as part of the American Medical Informatics Association Nursing Informatics History Project.

The Patricia Starck, DSN, RN, FAAN papers covers the career of Dean Patricia Starck as the head of the UTHealth Science Center Houston’s School of Nursing (SON). The papers include administrative records, SON history, annual reports, strategic plans, nursing profession organizations, publications and awards. The collection roughly encompasses the years of Starck’s tenure as dean from 1984 to 2015.

The uniforms are one piece dresses with sleeves and skirts above the knee made from polyester-cotton. Each has a matching beret. One uniform is dark blue and one is light blue. Both uniforms are in good condition, although the light blue uniform has sweat stains under the armpits. Both uniforms were donated by Adrian Melissinos, RN, PhD, a Houston resident.

This collection consists of a ledge documenting what appears to be allergy-related experiments from the 1940s, along with some notes. This collection was donated by Berne Black, the daughter of Bernard G. Efron. Dr. Efron was the first president of the American College of Allergists. He practiced in New Orleans.

Although the collection is not in good shape, it does contain valuable information for anyone interested in the study or history of allergies and allergy research.

Oral histories on community mental health in Texas created during Curtis Mooney’s dissertation research.

Collection contains a digital copy of a 1992 video recording of author/activist Jan de Hartog (1914 April 22 – 2002 September 22) speaking about the Jefferson Davis Hospital scandal of the 1960’s. De Hartog was a longtime resident of Houston and member of Live Oak Friends Meeting, and personal friend of the donors. The original video was recorded by Warren, Ph.D., and Marsha Holleman, M.D., also members of Live Oak and faculty at Baylor College of Medicine.

Dr. Robert E. Rakel, MD, donated the portrait of Sir William Osler by Konrad Hack. The portrait of Sir William Osler was painted by Konrad Hack in 1984. The portrait is large. The visible canvas measures 17.75 inches wide and 23.75 inches tall. The simple wooden frame is 27 inches wide and 33 inches tall. The painting is typical of Hack’s style with a predominately blue color scheme. The portrait is a flipped image of a portrait of Osler, which was probably painted from life. In Hack’s portrait, Osler is seated, looking at the observer, left arm resting on the back of his chair and left hand pressed against and supporting the side of his head. His right leg is crossed over his left, and his right hand rests on top of his right thigh. The signature “K. Hack” appears in the lower right hand corner of the painting.

The portrait has two plaques attached to the front, one at the top of the frame and one at the bottom of the frame. The top plaque reads: “Presented to Robert E. Rakel, M.D., by Mead Johnson Pharmaceutical Division in recognition of contributions to the field of family medicine. March 1985.”

The bottom plaque reads “Sir William Osler, M.D. (1849-1919)

This collection consists of one oversize box containing Dr. Wittich’s diplomas and awards. Fredrick William Wittich, MD, (1885-1965) was the first president of the World Allergy Organization, which was first incorporated in the United State in August 1954.

This collection consists of various sizes of diplomas, awards and one photograph, all of which are in good condition. At least two of the diplomas appear to be excellent examples of the calligraphers art and some of the lettering rivals the work of illuminated manuscripts. The box measures 20.5 inches wide, 24.5 inches long, and 1.75 inches deep.

The Mac Suzuki Photograph Collection, MS 196, contains 838 color slides of 35 mm film taken by Mac Suzuki, MD. Most of the images were taken in Japan between 1948 and 1952 while Dr. Suzuki’s worked with the Atomic Bomb Casualty Commission. This material was donated by the children of Dr. Suzuki. The images are good condition although there is some evidence of vinegar syndrome. Most of the slides are Kodachrome with rich color and very sharp images depicting rural, tourist and work related scenes. A few slides are an off-brand of film, which account for the vinegar syndrome.

One unusual characteristic of the storage system is how Dr. Suzuki identified the slides. He used different colors of ink to write on the edges of the cardboard film holder. Using this method, he indicated the subjects of slides, such as Rice, Nikko, etc. Rice depicts rice farming in Japan in the 1950s. Nikko depicts the resort area in the 1950s. Now, the slides are in inert plastic sleeves in folders organized by slide number. This collection is 0.5 cubic feet (1 box).

The Sharon Ostwald, RN papers consists of 12 boxes equaling 12 cubic feet, and 3 plaques. The Sharon Ostwald, RN, collection includes photographs, school records from childhood through college, theses and dissertations, autobiographical information, awards, research and publications, procedural material, nursing garments and academic robes, media presentations on DVD, and interviews.

The collection consists of one medical bag with contents, totaling 1 cubic foot.

This is personal collection of medical medallions acquired by John P. McGovern, MD. There are 188 medals, three of which are numbered and stored as pairs.

The collection consists of 6 large boxes, totaling 6.0 cubic feet, of medical medallions dating from the late 1700s to the 20th century. Many of the medals were produced as commemorative items in the 1960s and 1970s. The bulk of the medals come from the Great Men of Medicine Art Medals series. The collection contains two complete sets of the 50 medals, in both the silver and bronze versions. These were sculpted by Abram Belskie and distributed by Presidential Art Medals, Inc. of Vandalia, Ohio, from 1969 to 1974. In addition to the medals themselves, these commemorative series also include pamphlets describing the medals and the accomplishments of the figures portrayed.

A second group of modern medals includes examples from the Hall of Fame for Great Americans at New York University, presented by the Medallic Art Company and also sculpted by Belskie. In addition, there are several examples of the medals issued for the Medical Library Association's Seventy-fifth Annual Meeting in Minneapolis, Minnesota in June of 1976.

The remaining 70 or so items are historical medallions ranging in dates from at least 1773 to 1971, though many of them are undated. Many of them recognize physicians, hospitals, organizations, events, or developments in medicine. Many are in English, while others appear to be in Latin, French, or other languages. Many of these arrived in the archives in envelopes with accompanying notes with information such as their size, composition, and sculptor. These notes have been added to the descriptions of individual medallions when available.

Many of the medals--particularly modern ones--arrived at the archives in their original boxes. These have been retained and are stored along with the medals, separated by tissue paper for preservation reasons.

The papers of Mara M. Baun are concerned mainly with the creation of a doctoral program for the University of Texas School of Nursing in Houston. Other topics include Baun’s administration and teaching and research papers. The collection consists of 4 boxes and equals 4 cubic feet. The materials are in good condition.

This collection consists of the administrative records and other materials of Dr. Richard Wainerdi who was president of the Texas Medical Center, 1984-2012.

This collection reflects the interest Herman E. Detering, III, owner of the Detering Book Gallery, had in photography and psychiatry in the 19th century. A primary focus is on the treatment and study of people experiencing various forms of mental illness. Publications from numerous hospitals, asylums, and other organizations are included. The coverage includes the United States, France, England and other places in Europe.

The original materials Detering gathered include 19th century carte de visites, a collection of glass plate negatives from the 1920s, and postcards and other images related to hospitals and asylums. Accompanying the photographs are some realia, such as a magic lantern and a camera and stand, all of which are probably from the late 19th century. The collection also includes material related to Mr. Detering’s bookstore and his collecting activities, such as correspondence and invoices.

A significant portion of the collection consists of prints Detering created in preparation for to the exhibit "Photography and Psychiatry in the 19th Century." Curated by Mr. Detering for Houston FotoFest '88, the exhibit was on display from February 25 - March 25, 1988 at the Texas Medical Center in Houston, TX. In addition to various iterations of prints, there is also some correspondence related to exhibit preparation.

The Hermann Detering Book Collection on Psychiatry and Photography (McGovern Historical Center RB 002) has been separated from this archival collection. However, when those books were reviewed, ephemera found within their pages was removed, placed in archival folders, and kept with the archives. The folders were given numbers corresponding to the books in which the items were found.

Many of the prints and working documents in the collection were generated by Mr. Detering around the 1980s, but the source materials range widely in dates, going back at least to the 1800s.

The Sara Ann Barton's Lithium and Trace Metal research papers includes research material, reprints, environmental reports, questionnaires, and notes from Barton’s research on lithium and trace metals. Some material is in Spanish.

The Japanese wood block prints collection consists of Japanese woodblock prints that were acquired by the McGovern Historical Center over time. How the prints came to archive is uncertain. However, it the opinion of the archive staff that the prints were part of other Atomic Bomb Casualty Commission collections acquired by ABCC staff during their work in Japan. The prints lack provenance, but because of their cultural value the prints are being preserved. The collection contains one folder in the Small Manuscript Collection (SMS) oversize box.

There are three prints. “Plum Blossoms and Long Tailed Bird” by Utagawa HIROSHIGE (1797-1858), printed in 1830 in Edo period in the uyiko-e style and measuring 6 15/16 inches wide by 15 1/16 inches tall. HIROSHIGE is considered to be the last great artist in that style. This print is a polychrome woodblock print, in and color on paper.

The other two prints are in the Shin-hanga style, which is a style associated with prints produced around 1910 to 1920. They are from the famous Night Scenes series, characterized by the use of blue and black ink to create the night scences. The prints are known as “Lake Biwa,” depicting a small boat on Lake Biwa and “Ohashi Bridge at Atako,” depicting travelers crossing the bridge at night. The artist for both prints is Shoda KOHO (1878-1946). The prints measure 7.5 inches wide by 10.25 inches tall. They are referred to by collectors as (chuban-sized prints).
