This collections consisted of a black medical bag as well as medicines and medical tools that were apparently owned by A. G. Boss Brown, M.D. from Bosworth, Missouri. The materials range from good condition to very poor condition. As of January 2022, the bag itself is no longer part of the collection, and its disposition is unknown. There are 22 remaining envelopes of objects.

The A.M. Autrey, Jr., DDS, collection is made up of a dental cabinet, a print of Sir Luke Fildes’ painting The Healing Brotherhood, and an array of medical and dental implements dating from approximately the late 19th through the early 20th centuries. Most items are undated.

The collection also includes two View Master projectors and “Stereoscopic Atlas of the Human Anatomy” by David L. Bassett, MD, complete set of 1-213 slides, T-shirt of "International Conference on the Health Effects of Low Dose Radiation", artifacts, books, business cards, dombra (instrument), glass hedgehog figurine, camel figurine, Kazakhstan canteen, 3 traditional Kazakhstan robes and hat, and colorimeter that belonged to his father.

The collection equals 3 cubic feet (4 boxes). Majority of collection will be submitted digitally. First ZIP file was emailed on 9/7/2016. Dr. Weinberg was issued a flash drive (HRC_32_01) to submit other ZIP files at one time. This collection consists of a ledge documenting what appears to be allergy-related experiments from the 1940s, along with some notes. This collection was donated by Berne Black, the daughter of Bernard G. Efron. Dr. Efron was the first president of the American College of Allergists. He practiced in New Orleans.

Although the collection is not in good shape, it does contain valuable information for anyone interested in the study or history of allergies and allergy research.

Dr. Bernard M. Barrett studied at the University of Miami for his medical degree. His collection documents his involvement in editing and coauthoring different research, books, and articles. The collection includes several edited drafts by Dr. Barrett and his colleagues' drafts he would edit. The most prominent collection of documents surrounding the publication of the book and its editions, "Patient Care in Plastic Surgery," is well documented in the collection. The collection also includes: pamphlets; reports; reprints; correspondence; letters; memos; research; advertisements; and financial records.

This collection consists of two oversize illustrations created by Bill Andrews, who was a medical illustrator active in the Texas Medical Center. The two illustrations in this collection are intended to be humorous and are related to the winter holiday season. The first illustration is titled "Biological Luminescence in Reindeer" copyrighted in 1986. It measures 32 inches wide by 15.5 inches tall. The second illustration is titled "Comparative Anatomy of the Fruitcake" copyrighted in 1995. It measures 24 inches wide by 21 inches tall. Both illustrations are printed with a brown ink. The fruitcake anatomy suffered some water damage and most of the text is readable. The reindeer illustration is in good shape.

MS 215 Boris Yoffe, MD papers contains photographic prints and 35mm slides related to Radiation Effects and Events. They document the trips to Eastern Europe with Dr. Armin Weinberg. Other materials in the collection include: 7 books, 2 VHS cassette tapes, a Rotary Cell Culture System with 3 rotary culture vessels, and slides related to the rotary cell culture system and liver experiments. Photograph prints and 35mm slides equals less than .25 cubic feet, and the rotary cell culture system apparatus equal a cubic foot. The collection totals 1.25 cubic feet. Materials are in good condition.

The Bryant Boutwell papers contains certificates and plaques, Osler books Modern Medicine set 1907, JAMA special edition 1969 on Osler, set of two green Osler books, Conversation files, portfolio, yearbooks, and other papers related to Dr. Boutwell and his work.

Buddhist in Gold on Shoji Paper contains, a single page containing a color illustration and inscription in Mandarin Chinese of a descriptive poem. Illustration made on Shoji paper. The item is in good condition. Page measures 34.5 centimeters by 33 centimeters; 0.0625 cubic feet (one folder).

Dr. Tessmer served as the first Director of the Atomic Bomb Casualty Commission (ABCC), NAS-NRC Field Agency, from 1948 to 1951. His archival collection relates to the origin and subsequent progress of the ABCC. The bulk of the material in his collection is administrative in nature. Included are semi-annual and annual reports, NAS and NRC committee reports, early negotiations, reports from the initial clinical surveys, published scientific reports and correspondence dating from 1947. Approximately, 300 photographs and 15 sets of negatives accompanied Dr. Tessmer's Collection. The photographs have since been moved, housed separately with the ABCC photograph collection, and have been cataloged. This collections is 7.125 linear feet (18 boxes).

Dr. Tessmer's Collection is essential for researchers studying the history of the Atomic Bomb Casualty Commission and early radiation medicine. Also available is a taped interview with Dr. Tessmer conducted by Dr. Mary Winkler, which was recorded on December 6, 1985. The collection is open for research. Individuals interested in using the collection should contact the Director of the Historical Research Center or the Coordinator for the ABCC Collections.

The Carl F. Tessmer Collection contains publications from a number of government agencies, military branches and civilian organizations. They clearly illustrate the establishment and association with the Atomic Bomb Casualty Commission. Dr. Tessmer served as the first Director of the ABCC. The papers are predominately administrative and are organized under the issuing agency. The strengths of the collection are the early reports and correspondence dating from 1947 to the mid-1950s. The scientific publications come in the form of abstracts and reprints from the 1970s and 1980s.

Unique to this collection are several maps of Post-War Japan, cultural publications and artifacts. Most of these publications are no longer available in Japan. e.g. Dr. Tessmer donated two lapel pins. The first is a Rotary International pin presented to him at the time he became an honorary member of the Hiroshima Rotary. The second is the ABCC pin. Which was designed to follow the widespread Japanese custom of a lapel pin to show association with a company or institution, and to assist with identification. It is made, incidentally, by one of the traditional Japanese methods of fine metal work. Essentially it involves incising the metal surface and hammering small filaments of gold into the clefts. It incorporates the proper Aesculapian figure. Worthy of note is the fact somewhat later ABCC members were told that the Japanese reacted a little unfavorably to the serpent portion. The concept of the pin was readily accepted by the early Japanese staff. Its subsequent use is unknown.

As stated in the introduction, Dr. Tessmer's photographs have been rehoused and cataloged as single items and in sets. The bibliographic records and holdings are in a machine readable format. The findings aid for the photographs are the following: traditional card files and computerized bibliographic records in online catalogs. All of the photographs are black and white and most were taken by Mr. Einhorn, photographer for the U.S. Army Signal Corps. These photographs provide a wonderful visual record of the establishment and early activities of the ABCC.

The individual series are arranged under the alpha-numeric code given by the issuing agency, chronologically and alphabetically where applicable. Segments of the collection arrived with an established order. Where possible, the initial organization was retained. Dr. Tessmer wisely saved notes, draft copies, annotated versions and final printings of significant reports. This provides researchers a unique opportunity to explore the various stages for issued reports. His collection did not contain many duplicates or photocopies. All metal hinges, staples, and paper clips were removed. Archival bond was interleaved to keep related documents and attachments together. Where required, documents on acidic paper were photocopied onto archival bond paper and the originals discarded. Some fragile documents were placed in L-velopes to maintain their integrity and to help contain possible contaminants.

I. Atomic Bomb Casualty Commission Field Agency Committee on Atomic Casualties Division of Medical Sciences National Research Council - Reports, 3 Boxes These reports are arranged chronologically. Most of the semi-annual reports were issued in two parts - part 1 is research and part 2 is administration. They date from 1 July 1951 through 31 December 1953. Other annual reports, summaries and quarterly reports that make-up this series date from 1950 and 1951. The semi-annual report in folder is accompanied by a handwritten note to C. Tessmer. The cover of the semi-annual report in folder 11 is labelled "corrected" and is accompanied by a typed memorandum from Dr. Frank H. Connell.

II. United States Atomic Energy Commission - NYO, 2 Boxes The publications in this series are files by NYO number. Recorded is the complete title, author and date. In some instance the TIS Issuance Date is given. NYO-4469 in folder 15 is stamped "Unclassified", initialled and dated 2/21/57. Printed are round table discussions by the survivors, bibliographies, medical examinations and follow-up studies. Included are three growth and development program studies by Earle L. Reynolds.

III. Office of the Air Surgeon, 2 Boxes There are five volumes of reports in this series dated April 19, 1951. They are filed by NP number. Entitled : Medical Effects of Atomic Bomb. The Report of the Joint Commission on the Effects of the Atomic Bomb in Japan. Army Institute of Pathology.

IV. Magazine and Newspaper Articles, 1 Box The three articles filed in this series illustrates the continued interest in the atomic bomb survivors by the general population. The publications are : Life magazine, Empire: the magazine of the Denver Post and The Pittsburgh Press.

V. Reports Prepared for Director of Defense Nuclear Agency, 1 Box These reports are filed alphabetically. They all date from the early 1980s. Of the seven reports field in this series the first four are technical reports and the last three are final reports. Military focus.

VI. Abstracts and Reprints, 1 Box This single box contains 37 separate articles. They are filed alphabetically by title. All date from the late 1970s and the 1980s. The primary topic is the health of the a-bomb survivors and their offspring.

VII. 406th Medical General Laboratory, 1 Box Two public health reports are filed here. One is on the black flies of Japan and Korea.

VIII. Office of the Chief Surgeon Far East Command, 1 Box A published report from the office on parasitic mites is filed here.

IX. National Research Council, 1 Box Memorandum to the Committee on Atomic Casualties are filed here. This committee helped lay the groundwork for the foundation of the ABCC. It was created in 1947.

X. Ministry of Health and Welfare. Japanese Government. 1 Box The Japanese National Institute of Health of Minstry of Health and Welfare formally joined the studies of the ABCC in 1948. A single administrative public health report is filed here.

XI. ABCC Correspondence and Reports, 2 Boxes This is one of the most outstanding series of this collection. Filed here are correspondence and interim reports leading to the establishment of the ABCC - primarily to and from the General Headquarters Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers. Public Health and Welfare Section. Discussed is the need for the ABCC, the funding, and continued support. There are letters from Dr. H. Grant Taylor to Dr. Tessmer. Dr. Taylor succeeded Dr. Tessmer as the Director of ABCC. Included are annotated copies of reports issued by Dr. Tessmer as ABCC Director. The first clinical studies by ABCC scientists are filed here. Some are preliminary reports, status surveys - marked not for publications and studies that include letters from the authors and sets of photographs. This is indicated on the inventory. The photographs were sleeved, labelled and left with pertinent correspondence, manuscripts, drafts, or reports.

XII. Cultural and Historical Publications on Japan, 1 Box This series is unique to the collection. Dr. Tessmer has collected tourist information printed in Occupied Japan. Included are guides, postcards, maps, published photographs, booklets. The cities of Hiroshima, Nagasaki, Tokyo and Nikko Shrine are represented.

XIII . Maps, 1 Box Some of the maps were issued by the United States Air Force and others by the Japanese Travel Bureau. All are folded and some have legends in both English and Japanese. This has been noted in the inventory.

XIV. Communications, 1 Box In this series are filed Japanese Telegraphs and materials from the Hiroshima Rotary Club. The Hiroshima Rotary Club conducted a program on September 27, 1949.

XV. Artifacts, 1 Box An ABCC lapel pin and part of a Rotary International lapel pin are boxed in this series. A description of the pins can be found in the second paragraph of the Organization section of this guide.

XVI. National Academy of Sciences and National Research Council, 1 Box, The reports, memoranda, and meeting programs in this series are from the 1950s. Accompanying some of the reports are handwritten notes. The reports are scientific, admistrative and procedural. The Carlos Vallbona, MD papers contains correspondence, course materials, slides; files from his 3701 Kirby office; and other material detailing the career of Dr. Vallbona as a pediatrician, educator, advocate, physical therapy and post-polio syndrome specialist. He held positions at Baylor College of Medicine and TIRR. The materials date from between 1968 and 2014. Materials were donated in three stages in 2014 and 2015. Collection consists of 54 boxes equaling 54 cubic feet.

The Charles T. L. Huang, PhD papers contain notebooks, experiment lab data, professional papers of Dr. Huang that detail his career at Baylor College of Medicine and Texas Children's Hospital. The collection consists of 5 boxes and loose materials (binders, notebooks) equaling 5 cubic feet.

The Cheves M. Smythe MD papers, Ms 176, has been arranged chronologically according to titles held, and additional items were placed at the end of the collection. This collection consists of research documents, correspondence, and publications. Highlights of the collection include information from the University of Texas Medical School at Houston. The Collection comprises of 10 boxes and is 9.5 cubic feet. All of the original boxes have been replaced, and the majority of the original folders have been replaced. Overall the collection is in good condition but should be handled with care as many papers are beginning to reflect their age.

The Claude C. Cody, III, MD papers consists of biographical material, reprints, articles, sketches, contribution proposals, a brass plaque, case reports, photographs and slides, hearing aid manuals, microscope slides, and a wax ear moulage spanning the life and career of Claude Carr Cody, III, as an ear, nose, and throat specialist. The collection totals 5 boxes and equals 4 cubic feet. Materials are in poor condition.

Connie Brady was a nursing student at the Shannon West Texas Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in San Angelo, Tom Green County, Texas, in 1960-1964. This collection includes a 1964 diary Brown wrote for a nursing course, school-related correspondence and papers, school publications, and nursing publications. The material is in good condition and is about 0.25 cubic feet (1 box). 1960-1964.

Shannon West Texas Memorial Hospital, which grew to Shannon Medical Center and to its current incarnation as Shannon Health System, opened in 1932, according to the Shannon West Texas Memorial Hospital Shannon Memorial School of Nursing Bulletin 1961-1962. West Texas ranchers J. M. and Margaret Shannon provided the funding to create a foundation that in 1931 established the hospital to serve San Angelo and Tom Green County.

The hospital and clinic has 19 locations, 17 of them in San Angelo, and includes three hospitals in San Angelo. It also has clinics in Del Rio and Ozona. Its nursing school is no longer in operation, but the foundation offers nursing scholarships through Angelo State University.

The D.H. Rankin Medical Artifacts Collection was donated by Dr. Rankin, a family physician in Austin, Texas. Dr. Rankin had a personal interest in hearing related devices and early twentieth century quack medical devices. Dr. Rankin acquired artifacts from online auction sites, auction houses, and catalogs. Receipts and sale information for some items are included in the control folder.

Highlights of the collection include bloodletting tools, vibratory quack medical devices, drug bottles with original medicines, and alcohol prescriptions during the United States prohibition era.

The collections of materials are dated from 1700 through 1950. The bulk of materials are from the late nineteenth to early twentieth century. The materials are predominantly from the United States with a few outliers from Great Britain, China, Mexico, and Denmark.

The collection totals 36 cubic feet and 20 boxes. Many objects are oversized and thus not stored in any box. The majorities of artifacts are stored in their original boxes and complete with promotional material where applicable. The condition of objects are, on average, very good. Damage is usually only present on the original boxes. Drugs and liquids have been saved and are stored separately in water tight bags. Care should be taken when unpacking boxes and unwrapping items as some items are sharp and/or have mechanical blades.

Daniel J. McCarty, MD's papers primarily relate to the Arthritis Foundation and the American Rheumatism Association. Documents relate to committees, board material, and other subjects. In addition, there are a number of reprints. While the reprints date as early as 1960, the professional organization records that make up most of the collection come from the late 1970s and 1980s.

The Daniel L. Creson, MD, PhD papers contains information about Dr. Creson's professional career primarily from the mid-1970s to the early 2000s. Personal correspondence and writings comprise the main portion of the first series. The second series contains information about the history of mental health facilities and providers in Texas, primarily from the early 1900s through the 1980s. Calendars in the third series document his professional meetings and some personal events. Series 4 contains material used in classes, lectures and seminars taught by Dr. Creson as well as information about programs he coordinated. Information about his membership in professional and other organizations is provided in Series 5. Series 6 contains manuscripts as well as reprints of some of his publications. Dr. Creson's humanitarian work is documented in some detail in Series 7 and includes photographs of many of his trips abroad for this purpose. Series 8 has documents about his consultancy work for legal purposes.

This collection contains ads, newspapers and other ephemera associated with San Diego and dental practice. The pages from the San Diego newspaper date from October 1912 and contain both ads and articles related to dental practice. The comic books are from 1974 and are of Doctor Strange and Action Comics featuring Superman. The drug advertisements range from the early 20th century to the 1970’s. One lithograph titled ‘The Lost Tooth’ by artist Chas A. Maclellan from the 20th century. There are several French dental related prints from the 18th century. Also there are early 19th century prints from London related to medical equipment and animal teeth structure. A set of acupuncture charts with labels in both English and Chinese. A large hanging ink drawing of primitives filing teeth to points is in moderate condition due to being stored folded for an extended period of time. A dental patent from 1869 for artificial teeth includes drawings of the apparatus and an official seal.

The collection is comprised of flat paper objects with a range of media and paper substrates. Objects date from the 18th century to the 1970’s. Overall the collection is in stable condition. The newspaper is acidic but in fair condition. The large hanging drawing is the most delicate object within the collection and should be handled with care and not folded. The collection takes up approximately 1.5 cubic feet (1 box and 1rolled object).

The Denton A. Cooley, MD papers consists of the personal and professional correspondence, administrative records, patient information, publications, artifacts, scrapbooks, photographs and ephemera of Denton Cooley, MD. Dr. Cooley was born August 22, 1920 and died November 18, 2016. He was known as an American heart and cardio-thoracic surgeon famous for performing the first implantation of a total artificial heart.

The collection is unprocessed, although a box level inventory created by Dr. Cooley’s staff is available. The bulk of the material is in good shape. Some newspaper clippings are degrading due to acidic newsprint. The collection consists of 184.5 cubic feet or about 185 boxes.

MS 167 Doan's Directory of the United States pamphlet is a product of the Foster-Milburn Co. located in Buffalo, New York. Published in 1932, the pamphlet gives the population of cities in the U.S. as listed in the 1930 U.S. census. The pamphlet also includes testimonials, history, medicinal uses of Doan's Pills and other Doan products. This 34-page pamphlet was published by the Foster-Milburn Co. located in Buffalo, New York. It measures 5.5 inches by 8 inches. The pamphlet has a two-color cover. The pamphlet is in the early stages of becoming brittle. The collection contains one folder in the Small Manuscript Collection (SMS) box.

The Donald J. Fernbach, MD papers contain materials relating to his career in pediatric oncology at Baylor College of Medicine and Texas Children's Hospital.

A significant amount of material comes from the Southwest Cancer Chemotherapy Study Group, of which Dr. Fernbach was a founder, and its successors the Southwest Oncology Group and Pediatric Oncology Group. The groups would meet, correspond, and collaborate on grants to conduct clinical trials for research and to improve patient care. Dating from 1956 through 1990, these materials include meeting minutes, agendas, grant applications and documentation, correspondence, and reports. Many of these materials relate to the groups' Cancer Chemotherapy grants / Acute Leukemia in Children (ALinc) studies.

Another focal point of the collection is Dr. Fernbach's work at Baylor College of Medicine and Texas Children's Hospital. The materials related to these institutions span his career from approximately 1955 to 1991. A significant portion relates to his work on various committees within both institutions. Other materials relate to the Hematology-Oncology Service / Section, which Dr. Fernbach established, as well as the Research Hematology Laboratory. In addition, there are copies of several theses and dissertations written by Baylor students advised by Dr. Fernbach.

The collection also documents his involvement in other organizations such as the Ronald McDonald House in Houston, the American Cancer Society, and the University of Texas.

In addition to text and information pertaining to his book Clinical Pediatric Oncology, the collection also includes other publications, reprints, and presentations. Similarly, aside from the Acute Leukemia in Children (ALinC) studies, there is also research from other projects, such as the National Wilm's Tumor Study.

Dr. Fernbach's papers include extensive correspondence. Where clearly associated with a single organization or project, the correspondence has been filed within the appropriate series. In other cases, general or wide-ranging correspondence has been added to its own series.

A final small section of the collection documents Dr. Fernbach's anti-smoking advocacy within the Texas Medical Center and Houston.

The Donna R. Copeland, PhD papers contains 7" reel audio tapes, audiocassettes, brochures, manuscripts, and conference information that document Dr. Copeland's career in pediatrics. Collection consists of 6 boxes equaling 3 cubic feet. Materials are in good condition.

The Dorothea Kassell, RN papers contains newsletters, committee reports, memos, annual reports, business meeting minutes relating to the Houston Area Association of Occupational Health Nurses and Houston Area Association of Industrial Nurses, print campaigns, reprints, and other printed materials which document the career and experience of Dorothea Kassel’s career as an occupational health nurse. The collection consists of 3 boxes equaling 2 cubic feet.

This collection consists of Dorothy Otto's personal and professional papers related to her long career on the faculty of the Cizik School of Nursing at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center in Houston.

The bulk of the collection dates from the founding of the UT School of Nursing in 1972. Dr. Otto's papers include her office files, records of her professional involvement, and some materials reflecting her personal interests. In addition to paper records, there are also a small number of VHS tapes, floppy disks, optical media, and flash drives, as well as artifacts and four large foam presentation boards. The materials labeled "Personal" contain historical nursing stamps she collected, thank you cards and other correspondence, artifacts, and historical nursing quotes Otto made into bookmarks.

Much of the collection documents Otto’s work at the Cizik School of Nursing, as well as the history of the School itself. There are faculty meeting minutes, handbooks, and other records from the School’s early development in the 1970s. Later records include programs and presentation materials relating to Nursing School anniversaries, where Otto often spoke about history of the School.

There is also substantial coverage of Otto’s professional and personal endeavors in nursing beyond Houston. Multiple boxes document her role as Academic Leader for Nursing International Journeys educational trips. Her work on various nursing education committees and in other leadership roles is reflected in printed email correspondence, meeting agendas and minutes.

Otto’s interest in the history of nursing is apparent throughout the collection. There are photocopies of articles and other sources she shared with colleagues or used in preparation for her lectures and speeches. There are also artifacts such as historical nursing stamps and brochures she collected on her travels to places like London’s Florence Nightingale Museum.

There are also copies of Dr. Otto’s master’s thesis and doctoral dissertation.

Earl J. Brewer, MD papers consist primarily of professional correspondence; organization and protocols for national and international cooperative medical studies; grant applications and correspondence regarding a wide range of local, state and national research and coordinated care/case management projects concerning chronic illnesses in children; various organizations' board meeting and committee meeting minutes and reports; drafts, manuscripts, and reprints of published professional papers and books; documentation of Dr. Brewer's founding and chairing the Texas Children's Hospital's Pediatric Rheumatology Center, Baylor College of Medicine's Rheumatology Section of the Pediatric Department, Kelsey-Seybold's Pediatric Department, and the Pediatric Rheumatology Study Group; records of Dr. Brewer's oxygen tent patent, of his organization and participation in Houston's Family-to-Family Network, the 1987 Surgeon General's Conference which was held in Houston, the American Rheumatism Association Conferences of Rheumatic Diseases in Park City, UT, American Juvenile Arthritis Organization, American Academy of Pediatrics Rheumatology Section, and the American Board of Pediatrics Pediatric Sub-specialty; certificates, awards, and honors bestowed upon Dr. Brewer in recognition of his professional achievements; video and audio cassettes and films, photographs, slides, and scrapbook and other oversize memorabilia. Earl Brewer died on March 19, 2015 in Houston, Texas at the age of 86.

Edmund K. Doak, MD Papers contain an autobiography and 5 typescript works detailing the career of Edmond Doak in internal medicine. Edmond Doak passed away November 29, 2000.

The Edward Trowbridge Wolf, MD, papers (MS003) is 3 cubic feet and consists of 7 document boxes with some materials also located in the communal oversize box. It contains biographical information, personal and professional correspondence, certificates, official documents, news clippings, telegrams, drawings, and books that detail the personal life, professional activities, medical related records and papers associated with the World War II experiences of Dr. Edward Trowbridge Wolf in the Pacific Theater, various stateside military posts and also the Houston Texas Medical Center. Wolf was the executor of estate for Mr. Isiah Leebove and as a result the legal and financial documents related to the Leebove estate are included here. The materials are in good condition; however there is some evidence of water damage probably caused by the flooding of the archives during tropical storm Allison in 2001. As a result, ink applied by pens often has been washed away or is illegible. Ink applied by typewriters is clearly legible in the documents. After the flood, the archivists took steps to preserve and restore the collection. The material is unrestricted with a few exceptions (for Patients Diagnosis) that are clearly marked in the detailed description and on the box and folders. The collection is 3 cubic feet (7 boxes) and in good condition.

The Elie M. Watts III, DDS papers contains books, realia, and ephemera related to the career of Dr. Watts in general dentistry.

The Elizabeth Vainraub Oral History contains digital video files, audio files, photographs, and prepared questions of an oral history interview of Elizabeth Vainraub conducted by Armin Weinberg and Sara Rozin. Vainraub's work was related to addressing the effects of the Chernobyl accident on those in the area at the time and those who immigrated from there to other locations including the US and Israel.

The Elwin L. Shelton, Jr., MD papers consists largely of materials related to his professional life, such as presentations and publications, published and unpublished papers, and accreditations. There are copies of Medical Director's Notebook from 1957-1960. There are also materials on topics such as philosophy, hypnosis, intestinal by-pass, GI, breast, and peritoneal dialysis research. Some items pertain to the Texas Surgical Society, Southern Society of Clinical Surgeons, and Houston Gastroenterological Society. Finally, there are some personal items, such as biographical data, photos and "treasured letters." The collection ranges in dates from 1948-1990.

The Emil Steinberger MD papers contains Dr. Steinberger's reprints, which are bound in five volumes, a speech by Dr. Steinberger, a curriculum vitae, and several obituaries. He lived from 1928-2008. The collection consists of 2 boxes equaling 1 cubic foot.

This collection consists of one small photo binder containing 56 photos measuring about 5 x 3.5 inches. There are also several loose photos that are roughly 6.5 x 4.5 inches as well as 8.5 x 5 inch photos. The photos document events related to the Atomic Bomb Casualty Commission or the Radiation Effects Research Foundation. Many of the pictures were taken at the Hijiyama facility in Hiroshima. A few photos show U.S. Senator Ted Kennedy visiting the ABCC Hijiyama facility. Other photos depict reunions or gatherings of former members of the ABCC and RERF. Most of the individuals are not identified. ENAMI Akiko donated this collection through her friend UEMOTO Merry, who visited the McGovern Historical Collections research center October 18 and October 19, 2012 along with Dr. Jack Schull. The notebooks from Dr. Knobil's research laboratories comprise the largest series (X). General Files, Series IV, contains material including correspondence, lectures and speeches from the early 1980s to 2000. It was retained in the alphabetical order it was received. Material in Series II was labeled Harvard and deals primarily with Dr. Knobil's tenure at Harvard University in the 1950s. Material about his Deanship of the University of Texas Medical School at Houston can be found in Series III and IV.

The Ernst W. Bertner, MD papers (MS002) is 6.5 cubic feet and consists of seven documents boxes and two oversize boxes. It contains biographical information, personal and professional correspondence, speeches, certificates, official appointments, newsclippings, scrapbooks, photographs, audiovisual materials, and realia that detail the personal life, professional activities, and leadership of Dr. Ernst W. Bertner in Houston and the Texas Medical Center. The materials are in good condition.

The files contain curriclum vita and lists compiled by Dr. Kahn of his published and unpublished writings. Correspondence contains letters between Dr. Alex D. Pokorny, Mrs. Kahn and others following Dr. Kahn's death. Photographs of Dr. Kahn with other professors in 1960 and ca. 1930 (with some identification) are included.

Copies, most original reprints from the journals, of all published articles and copies of all unpublished writings, which were frequently given as lectures, are in the collection. Some of the published articles are in German. An unpublished manuscript for a longer work, The Eternal Psychopath, is included.

The files also contain copies of reports to the Dean at Yale, annual reports (Baylor 1957-58, 1959-60), correspondence with Dr. H. Schipperges, reprints of Dr. Kraepelin's writings, and reviews of Dr. Kahn's writing and miscellaneous writings by others.

The Felix L. Haas, PhD papers document his life and career with the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston. The bulk of the collection pertains to his work at the University of Texas Health Science Center, the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, and the University of Texas Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences (UTGSBS) in Houston.

The collection reflects both his research interests and his administrative roles. The collection includes biographical information, professional records, correspondence, certificates, reprints, typescripts, publications, theses and dissertations, experiment notebooks, lectures, speeches, grant materials, committee reports and meeting minutes, course outlines, and audio recordings.

Unique to the collection are the audiotapes (reel-to-reel and compact cassette) that detail the beginnings of the UTGSBS. The recordings include meetings of Committee on Graduate Studies (1963-1965)--which he chaired--and lectures from courses given by UTGSBS faculty (1971-1978).

While most of the collection is based in Houston, there is a notable series of materials from the Argonne National Laboratory in Illinois.

The Ferid Murad, MD papers consists of fifiteen handwritten notebooks documenting Dr. Ferid Murad's research. The notebooks include research data presented in tables and charts, as well as Dr. Murad's notes. The notebooks span the years 1959-1970. The first set of notebooks (#1-12) corresponds to his doctoral and medical studies at Western Reserve University, which concluded in 1965. The second set (1-11) pick up in 1967.

In addition, the collection includes a small number of printed materials from organizations of which Dr. Murad was a part. Notably, there are manuals from his internship and residency at Massachusetts General Hospital, dating around 1965. The Information for House Staff manual includes handwritten notes. The only two items dating from after 1970 are are a guide from the Stanford Institute of Biological and Clinical Investigation and a National Academy of Sciences membership directory.

Collection contains two media programs on mental health created by Julia Arnold Schnapp and Bill Schnapp. Program on VHS video cassette, "In Their Shoes" (1998) produced by the Mental Needs Council of Harris County. Program on 16mm film, "Help Wanted" (1958) produced by Mental Health Study Group of the Junior League of Houston. A paper script is available for the 1958 film.

MS 166 Fleischmann's Compressed Yeast and Good Health pamphlet is a product of the Fleischmann Company. Published in 1919, the pamphlet presents compressed yeast as a Household Remedy for many ailments from pimples and boils to constipation and wasting diseases. This 26-page pamphlet was published by the The Fleischmann Company in New York. It measures 4.5 inches by 6.75 inches. The four-color cover is still rich with color. The pamphlet is in fairly good shape with paper that remains flexible. The collection is contained in the Small Manuscript Collection (SMS) within one folder measuring 0.0625 cubic feet.

This appears to have been created in part by Baylor College of Medicine and The Institute of Rehabilitation and Research (TIRR). The material shows some water damage. This collection is 0.25 cubic feet (1 box).

Physical Description: This collection of 150 pages shows some water damage in the form of staining and warped pages. However, the material is easily readable. This lesson plan or course outline originally was in a vinyl binder. The papers were removed from the binder, placed in acid-free folders and then in an acid-free box. The vinyl binder was discarded. Francis Catlin was born on December 6, 1925 in Hartford, Connecticut. He received his Doctor of Medicine degree in 1948 from Johns Hopkins University, where he also served two residencies in otolaryngology and. Dr. Catlin served in the U.S. Air Force Medical Corps from 1950-1952 at the rank of Captain and was the Assistant Chief of E.N.T. Service, U.S. Air Force, 1100th Medical Group, Bolling Air Force Base in Washington, D.C. Dr. Catlin taught and conducted research as a faculty member at Johns Hopkins from 1955-1972. There, he was a part of the Department of Otolaryngology in the School of Medicine, the School of Public Health and Hygiene’s Environmental Medicine Department, and the Public Administration. In 1972 Dr. Catlin and his family moved to Houston, Texas, where he accepted the appointments: as Professor at the Baylor College of Medicine in the Department of Otorhinolaryngology; as Chief-of-Service in the department of Otolaryngology at St. Luke’s Episcopal the and Texas Children’s Hospitals; and as the Director of the Speech, Language, and Learning Disorders at the Texas Children’s Hospital. This collection consists of one oversize box containing Dr. Wittich’s diplomas and awards. Fredrick William Wittich, MD, (1885-1965) was the first president of the World Allergy Organization, which was first incorporated in the United State in August 1954.

This collection consists of various sizes of diplomas, awards and one photograph, all of which are in good condition. At least two of the diplomas appear to be excellent examples of the calligraphers art and some of the lettering rivals the work of illuminated manuscripts. The box measures 20.5 inches wide, 24.5 inches long, and 1.75 inches deep.

The Dr. Frederick C. Elliott Papers document Dr. Elliot's leadership roles in the University of Texas Dental Branch and Texas Medical Center, as well as other aspects of his career and personal life. The collection documents Dr. Elliott's career through committee and administrative reports, correspondence, legal papers, and legislative material. Also included are scrapbooks, personal memos, manuscripts, photographs, and audio tapes. There are copies of a number of Dr. Elliot's speeches, as well as materials relating to honors he received.

The Griff T. Ross, MD, oral history scrapbook was compiled by Stanley Joel Reiser, MD, MPA, PhD. Dr. Reiser is the Adjunct Professor, The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, School of Public Health, Austin Regional Campus; and the University of Texas Austin Plan II Honors Program. Dr. Reiser donated the scrapbook in March 2014. The scrapbook contains a bibliography of Dr. Ross’s works and an oral history interview of Dr. Ross. The scrapbook also includes interviews with Bill Ross, Griff Ross’s brother; Dr. Carlson (given name unknown); Dr. Alton Steiner, and Dr. Ernest Knobil. The scrapbook was actually a binder filled with loose sheets of 8.5 inch by 11 inch paper. The binder has been removed and discarded. The collection consists of 0.25 cubic feet (1 box).

D. Anderson Hospital and Tumor Institute (MDAH), currently known as UT M. D. The Harold Lynwood Warwick MD papers features newsclips, correspondence, letters, manuscripts, reprints, diagrams, blue prints, and photos documenting the personal life and professional career of Dr. Harold Lynwood Warwick. The collection includes documentation detailing the Dr.Warwick's military career. Most of the collection chronicles Dr.Warwick's recording device invention that he dedicated over eighteen years of his life. Dr. Warwick appears to primarily work in the field of Otolaryngology, or Ear, Nose, and Throat diseases.

The Harold Pruessner, MD papers contains documents relating to his role at the University of Texas Medical School at Houston, particularly in the Department of Family Practice. Contents include articles, curricula, training material, information about family practice, and other administrative materials. There is also an audio recording of an interview with Dr. Pruessner from 1998. Items date from 1964 to 1998, with most of them corresponding to his time in Houston, Texas.

The Harold S. Skjonsby, DDS, papers (MS069) is 2 cubic feet,consists of 5 boxes, and is in good condition. The collection contains memos, instructional materials, curriculum, and reports that document Harold S. Skjonsby’s time as faculty the University of Texas Dental Branch at Houston.

The Harris Busch papers is a conglomeration of reprinted research conducted by Dr. Harris Busch and his colleagues. The reprints are bound into volumes according to year. Dr. Busch's research was conducted at a variety of institutions including the Department of Medicine, Biochemistry, and Pathology at Yale University; University of Wisconsin Madison; and the Department of Pharmacology at University of Illinois. However, most of his research in the collection was conducted at the Department of Pharmacology at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, where he was Professor in the Department of Pharmacology. He would conduct research regarding cellular metabolism, cancer, toxicology, and pharmacology within the Department of Pharmacology at Baylor College of Medicine from approximately 1962-1997. This collection includes: publications, reports, research, reprints, and patents.

The Hebbel Hoff, M.D., collection (MS 023) consists of two series: papers and sound recordings. The papers include reprints and journal articles, a hospital survey, newsletters, a CV, and various ephemera. The material is loosely arranged by type of document. The sound recordings document Hoff's History of Medicine lectures from 1982.

The papers of Dr. Henry Renfert are made up mostly of personal letters from his time in the Navy during and after World War II, letters from the time of his residency training in between tours of duty, and official paperwork regarding his time in the Navy and Navy Reserves. Most of the material dates from between 1944 and 1954, with a few exceptions.

The collection also contains some miscellaneous items such as budget lists, bills, novelty poems, newspaper items about Renfert, Sr., and Dr. Renfert’s military medals.

Manuscript (MS) 159, The Herbert Fred, MD Papers, is a collection of papers related to Dr. Fred's medical career and personal life in five self-defined series: Medical, Running, Writing, Family, and Religious. Herbert Leonard Fred, MD was born in 1929 in Waco, Texas. He is known for his contribution to medical education. He is an award-winning clinician, diagnostician, and professor of internal medicine. In keeping with the beliefs of Sir William Osler, Dr. Fred, an emeritus American Osler Society member, centered his medical practice on the patient, championing the use of the mind and five senses to develop medical diagnoses.

Dr. Fred studied at Rice Institute from 1946 to 1950, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine from 1950 to 1954, and University of Utah Hospitals from 1954 to 1957. After service in the United States Air Force, he returned to Houston, Texas where he joined the faculty of Baylor University College of Medicine from 1962 to 1969. Ensuing academic appointments included: University of Texas Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences from 1968 to the present; Director of Medical Education, St. Joseph Hospital from 1969 to 1988; The University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston from 1971 to the present; Rice University from 1979 to 2002; and HCA Center for Health Excellence from 1988 to 1993.

The papers are in excellent condition. Documentary forms consist of correspondence, certificates of fact, scholarly presentations, scholarly article reprints, school boy essays, real estate deeds and titles, judicial decrees, news clips, portrait and event records. Formats include text; visual works in photographic, slide, pastel chalk, and pencil; audio works in video and audio on compact disc and magnetic tape along with award and gift realia. Dr. Fred collected images of disease conditions and symptoms throughout his career to use for medical education. The collection contains an extensive color slide collection of medical images, many of rare conditions. These slides are in fragile condition and some have faded beyond recognition. Extensive papers relating to Dr. Fred’s parents and grandparents from the Fred and Marks families in Waco, Texas are in the Family Series and contain some information about Waco and or Texas history. Geographic locations to which the records pertain are Waco, Amarillo, and Houston, Texas; Baltimore, Maryland; Salt Lake City, Utah; Europe and China. While most of the collection is open to public use, some folders and the medical images have restricted access due to patient confidentiality. With a date range from 1890 to 2013, the collection consists of 112 cubic feet in 88 boxes plus several realia objects in the Oversize collection.

This collection reflects the interest Herman E. Detering, III, owner of the Detering Book Gallery, had in photography and psychiatry in the 19th century. A primary focus is on the treatment and study of people experiencing various forms of mental illness. Publications from numerous hospitals, asylums, and other organizations are included. The coverage includes the United States, France, England and other places in Europe.

The original materials Detering gathered include 19th century carte de visites, a collection of glass plate negatives from the 1920s, and postcards and other images related to hospitals and asylums. Accompanying the photographs are some realia, such as a magic lantern and a camera and stand, all of which are probably from the late 19th century. The collection also includes material related to Mr. Detering’s bookstore and his collecting activities, such as correspondence and invoices.

A significant portion of the collection consists of prints Detering created in preparation for to the exhibit "Photography and Psychiatry in the 19th Century." Curated by Mr. Detering for Houston FotoFest '88, the exhibit was on display from February 25 - March 25, 1988 at the Texas Medical Center in Houston, TX. In addition to various iterations of prints, there is also some correspondence related to exhibit preparation.

The Hermann Detering Book Collection on Psychiatry and Photography (McGovern Historical Center RB 002) has been separated from this archival collection. However, when those books were reviewed, ephemera found within their pages was removed, placed in archival folders, and kept with the archives. The folders were given numbers corresponding to the books in which the items were found.

Many of the prints and working documents in the collection were generated by Mr. Detering around the 1980s, but the source materials range widely in dates, going back at least to the 1800s.

The Herman Walter Johnson, MD papers (MS001) is .25 cubic feet and consists of 1 box and oversized materials. It contains Dr. Johnson's autobiography (Reminiscences of a Male Midwife), United States Army appointment, news articles, certificates, and medical licenses that document the life, career, and military service of Dr. Herman Johnson. The records pertain to the geographic areas of Buffalo, New York and Houston, Texas. The materials are in good condition.

The Herman Wigodsky, MD papers contains Chernobyl Report and photocopied correspondence. The collection consists of one box equaling 1 cubic foot. Dr. Wigodsky's largest donation to the archive was the Chernobyl Report given in November 1986. He also donated a photocopy of a letter from Manfred Leiser of the International Atomic Energy Commission.

The Hilde Bruch, MD papers contains reprints, books, office files, patient records. The early gift of books and reprints, and the posthumous donation of books and papers have been integrated into the larger group of office records, making the total size of the collection 56 cubic feet. The processor of the papers has for the most part left Dr. Bruch's own arrangement intact. The arrangement includes office files, patient records dating from the 1940's, correspondence from colleagues as well as hundreds of letters from lay persons acquainted with Dr. Bruch's work on eating disorders. There are reprints from colleagues, correspondence with publishers, family and friends. Also included is same correspondence from Dr. Bruch's family in Germany and the Netherlands, and memorabilia from her long career in America. Dr. Bruch's papers offer important insights into psychiatric trends in the second half of the twentieth century, particularly into the treatment of psycho-social illness. They also detail in the life history of an individual, the personal and cultural crises precipitated by exile from Nazi Germany, and the struggle of women for greater participation in science and medicine, both significant phenomena in the history of this century. The collection equals 56 cubic feet consisting of 84 boxes.

This collection consists of three pages from a scrapbook and 23 photos depicting scenes in Hiroshima and staff members of the Atomic Bomb Casualty Commission (ABCC). This scrapbook may have belonged to Louise Cavagnaro, RN, who was a nurse with the ABCC in Hiroshima in 1948, when many of the pictures were taken. Cavagnaro donated her ABCC papers to the Texas Medical Center Library. Those papers seem to have been integrated into other collections or into the ABCC photo collection. These scrapbook pages were found in the archive without any descriptive data or record. All photos are provided with clear captions except for a photo of Cavagnaro, who is known through other photos that she donated to the archive. Each page measures 11 inches by 14 inches.

The Homer E. Prince, MD papers (MS038) is .25 cubic foot and consists of 1 document box. This collection documents the professional career of Dr. Homer E. Prince. The collection includes brief biographical information (1 document), and the remaining materials are composed of Dr. Prince's reprints published research within a range of medical and academic journals. Dr. Prince's research includes: reports on mold allergies; respiratory diseases, infections, and treatements; papers on allergies to various biological and evironemental agents; and various other treatments for allergies. The reprints date between 1934-1983. The collection is in good condition.

The Howard B. Hamilton, MD, papers, MS 066, includes material from 1945-1997 related to the Atomic Bomb Casualty Commission (ABCC) and the Radiation Effects Research Foundation (RERF). Hamilton was the Chief of Clinical Laboratories for the Atomic Bomb Casualty Commission from 1956 until its dissolution in 1975. He served in the same capacity for the Radiation Effects Research Foundation, which succeeded the ABCC, until 1984. This collection encompasses this period of time in Dr. Hamilton's career, as well as his related scholarly work after his retirement from RERF. Dr. Hamilton donated his collection of letters, reprints, newspaper articles, photographs, memos, and ephemera to the John P. McGovern Historical Collections and Research Center between 1985 and 2002. The collection is in good condition and consists of 3.75 cubic feet (8 boxes).

This collection contains eight series: I. Correspondence; II. Memorandum, Notes, Books; III. Conferences, Congresses, Manuscripts; IV. Reprints; V. Newspaper Articles; VI. Akio Awa Cartoons; VII. Additional Correspondence; VIII. Addendum Series. This collection contains many reprints of articles Hamilton wrote or co-wrote on topics including the structure and function of hemoglobin, biochemical genetics, and the long term after-effects of exposure to ionizing radiation. One highlight of the collection is a series of cartoons, Series VI, created by Hamilton's friend Dr. Akio Awa that gives a unique look into the daily goings-on of the ABCC and RERF. Another collection highlight is the photographs in the Addendum Series, Series VIII, which includes images of former United States Senator Ted Kennedy who visited RERF in the late 1970s. Photos also include group photos from many ABCC and RERF conferences and events.

This collection was donated to the Historical Research Center over a number of years, and the material was processed at different times by different people, which resulted in several different organizational schemes being used. During the most recent processing of the collection the arrangement of the material was left unchanged to maintain continuity and for the sake of scholarly citations that may have been made previously

Hamilton was born in Oak Park Illinois on December 4, 1918. He graduated from the University of Rochester in New York in 1941 and from Yale University School of Medicine in 1945. Hamilton served in the United States Navy from 1942-1945, during World War II. In the late 1940s and early 1950s Hamilton conducted research at Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard University, the Long Island School of Medicine, the New York College of Surgeons, and the University of Tokyo in Japan.

In 1956 Hamilton moved to Hiroshima, Japan, where he lived for the next thirty years. After his move to Japan, Hamilton served as the Chief of Clinical Laboratories for the Atomic Bomb Casualty Commission (ABCC) from 1956 until its dissolution in 1975. Hamilton worked in the same capacity for the Radiation Effects Research Foundation (RERF), which succeeded the ABCC, until 1984. Between 1984 and 1986 Dr. Hamilton began transitioning into retirement; he continued to work as a consultant for the RERF during this time.

Hamilton was a consummate scholar and published extensively thoughout his career. Hamilton published papers on topics including endocrinology, steroid chemistry, enzyme kinetics, hemoglobinopathies, the structure and function of hemoglobin, genetic polymorphisms, biochemical genetics, the long term after-effects of exposure to ionizing radiation, and epidemiology of cardio-vascular disease.

Hamilton's hobbies included playing tennis and practicing the Japanese theatrical art of Noh, which features dramatic masks and carefully defined movements. After his retirement, Dr. Hamilton catalogued Noh and Kabuki works and published Noh plays. In some circles, Dr. Hamilton was known as much for his enthusiastic patronage and participation in Noh as he was for his work with the ABCC and RERF. (Source: Washington Post, May 9, 2007)

Hamilton died on May 9, 2007 at his home in Falls Church, Virginia. He was 88 years old.

The collection is in good to excellent condition depending on the age of the individual item and how carefully it was stored and preserved in the years before it entered the HRC's collection. Dr. Hamilton donated his large collection of letters, reprints, newspaper articles, photographs, memos, and ephemera to the John P. McGovern Historical Collections and Research Center between about 1985 and 2002. The collection consists of 3.75 cubic feet (8 boxes) and is collection MS 066.

The Howard T. Barkley, MD papers (MS 028) contains degrees, licenses, newsletters, clippings, photographs, certificates, awards, and a book that document the career of Dr. Howard T. Barkley in thoracic surgery. The collection primarily focuses on Dr. Barkley's academic and professional achievements; however, there is a small series on his personal life as well as a collection of photographs. The collection consists of 3 boxes (1 document and 2 oversized) and equals 2.25 cubic feet. The materials are in good condition.

Dr. Sharon K. Ostwald, PhD, RN, FGSA, donated these recordings of nurses experiences in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, which devastated New Orleans, and Hurricane Rita. Many of the accounts are from nurses who responded to the flood of refugees from New Orleans after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina in August 2005. The City of Houston opened the George R. Brown convention center to the refugees. This collection consists of 5 CDs, 2 DVDs, 2 microcassettes audio tapes, three digital videocassettes, and release forms for some of the speakers. The material is in good condition.

The Irina Volguina Floppy Disks collection contains 12 3.5" floppy disks. The disks document the cancer registry and other work she did with Armin Weinberg.

This collection contains three yearbooks, two 8x10" photographs, two newspaper clippings and two programs that document the Memorial Hospital Nursing School graduating class of 1945, including Irma Elizabeth "Betty" Hightower of Marshall, Texas.

Printed paper is the predominant format in the collection though there are numerous black and white and color photographic prints, some objects and other ephemera and an 8mm sound film.

A large portion of the collection is comprised of various scrapbooks. The scrapbooks contain printed material, ephemera, and photographic prints, either taped or pasted on acidic paper that has browned and is brittle. The pages were removed from the scrapbooks, original order maintained, and stored in acid-free folders. In addition to the scrapbooks, the collection contained a large number of newspaper clipping. The clippings have not been arranged and are extremely brittle.

Highlights of the collection include the photo scrapbook, “The Army Life of Irvin Alan Kraft” and the complete records of Dr. Kraft’s military service.

The collection is approximately four cubic feet and contains seven boxes (three cubic foot, four various sizes) and one oversize folder. The materials are in fair to good condition and there are no preservation concerns at this time. The scrapbook pages are stored flat in boxes 4, 5, and 6; take care when removing the folders to preserve original order.

The Ivan Frances Duff, MD, papers, MS 90, consists of Dr. Duff's work in the field of rheumatology and his professional work in China and in Japan. The collection covers the years 1966-1993.

Dr. Ivan Frances Duff was born July 20, 1915 in Pendleton, Oregon. He died in October 1994. He graduated from the Univ. of Oregon and the Univ. of Michigan Medical School, where he completed his internship and residency training in internal medicine. In 1946 he joined the faculty of the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Michigan, as an instructor, becoming a Professor in 1960. Dr. Duff founded the Turner Geriatric Clinic a the University of Michigan Medical Center. His major interest was in the field of rheumatic diseases.

Dr. Duff was a member of U.S. Naval Reserve and served on active duty a commander in the Submarine Medical Service in the Pacific theater from 1942 to 1946. After the war, the returned to the University of Michigan where he joined the faculty of the Department of Internal Medicine.

Dr. Duff's interest in epidemiology led to studies with the Atomic Bomb Casualty Commission (ABCC) beginning in 1964. He was a researcher with the ABCC from 1967-1975 and then with the Radiation Effects Research Foundation (RERF) from 1975-1986. He studied the incidence and prevelance of rheumatoid arthritis and gout in Hiroshima and Nagasak patients.

In 1980, Dr. Duff was a member of an American Physician Exchange Group of twelve doctors visiting the People's Republic of China at the invitation of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences. This initial visit led to a long relationship between Dr. Duff and the Chinese medical community. From 1981 to 1991, he was a research consultant at Peking Union Medical College, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences Beijing, People's Republic of China, where he collaborated in epidemiologic studies of rheumatic diseases.

Dr. Duff was a leader in the field of rheumatology. He was the recipient of many awards and honors and served on many national panels. For a complete list of his accomplishments, please see Dr. Duff's vitae and obituary in this collection.

Dr. Duff died at his home in Ann Arbor, Michigan on Oct. 27, 1994 at the age of 79.

The materials are in good shape. However, some items were damaged and separated as a result of the 2001 flooding by Tropical Storm Allison, which devestated the Texas Medical Center and the archive of the HAM-TMC Library where this collection was stored. In the fall of 2013, an archivist discovered the missing folders in another collection where they had been stashed during the recovery process. The archivist reintegrated the newly discovered Duff files into MS 90. Old finding aids have been preserved to provide some scholars reference to the missing material. Where ever appropriate, Chinese or Japanese names are written with the surname first followed by the personal name. Some of the materials in this collection show water damage. Most of the damaged papers are in the Atomic Bomb Casualty Commission papers in series III. The processing archivist made photo copies if the paper was badly degraded or flaking to pieces. Most of the materials are in good shape. The collection consists of 3.75 cubic feet (6 boxes).

This material comes the Stanley family medical supply business, which operated in the Houston area. J. Richard Stanley donated the items. There are two items in this collection both of which are basal metabolism testers from 1937 and later. This material covers the years circa 1937-1950s. This material was sold through the Stanley family medical supply store in Houston. This collection pertains to medical equipment used for testing basal metabolism in humans. This material was in the possession of the family as part of store inventory and later as personal possessions.

The Jack Bangs, PhD and Tina Bangs, PhD papers contain charter, by-laws, amendments, correspondence, board minutes, programs and newsletters for the Speech and Hearing Institute, its merger with University of Texas. Collection contains correspondence related to the merger. Collection also contains annual reports, program documents, published and unpublished material, miscellaneous brochures and material from other speech and hearing centers, biographical information, committee books and oversized material related Jack and Tina Bangs and their work at the Speech and Hearing Institute.

Jack H. Levine, DDS papers contains annual faculty workshop, teaching handbooks, video tape catalog, pictorial directory, and student guides. Jack H. Levine was born in 1923 in Waco, Texas. He practiced dentistry for thirty-five years and taught at U.T. Dental School for fifteen years. Collection consists of two boxes equaling 1 cubic foot of various printed material.

The Jack R. Hild, MD papers contains new clippings, newsletters, correspondence, articles and research data related to the career of Dr. Jack Hild in pediatrics, specifically his work on polio. The collection consists of 1 box equaling 0.5 cubic feet. Materials are in good condition.

Scope & Content: James E. Barkley is a retired pharmacist and pharmaceutical salesman who worked for the Wellcome company. In the course of his career, Mr. Barkley collected numerous antique bottles of medicine. The collection contains bottles with medicine dating from the late 1800s.

Most of the bottles contain pills, but some bottles contain liquids. Bottles of liquid are stored in archival-quality plastic bags.

The James Greenwood Sr. and Jr., MDs papers consists of article drafts and reprints, professional correspondence, patient notes, journals, and photographs that document the careers of James Greenwood Sr. and James Greenwood Jr. in the fields of neuropsychiatry and neurosurgery, respectively.

The James H. Steele DVM, MPH papers (MS104) is 55 cubic feet and consists of 137 documents boxes, VHS, audiocassettes and 1 oversize photo. It contains biographical information, personal and professional correspondence, lectures, certificates and awards, topical research files, newsclippings, photographs, audiovisual materials, collected books and publications, and other realia that detail the personal life, professional activities, and leadership of James H. Steele during his time at the Centeres of Dissease Control and Prevention, as a professor at the University of Texas School of Public Health in Houston, TX, as Assistant Surgeon General, and his retirement. The materials are in good condition.

The collection primarily consists of video recordings, television scripts, and interview transcripts of Dr. Duke’s popular nationally and internationally syndicated television programs, “Dr. Red Duke’s Health Reports”, “Body Watch”, and “Life is Difficult” from 1987-1998. These materials illustrate his valuable contributions as a television host, engaging and educating both the public and the medical community through live medical consultations, surgical procedures, and international teleconferences.

In addition to these various audiovisual materials, the collection also contains correspondence, photographs, slides, lecture outlines, research, and presentations concerning emergency medical services, trauma response, and disaster relief. These materials are related to the American Trauma Society, the Life Flight program, and the Disaster Relief and Emergency Medical Services (DREAMS) project, all of which were co-founded and/or pioneered by Dr. Duke.

“The Mystery of Compassion” is #4 of a series of six autobiographical lectures entitled “Compassion and the Art of Medicine” given between 1991 and 1995 by Dutch author and longtime Houston resident Jan de Hartog. Mr. de Hartog and his wife, Marjorie, were involved in the expose of the poor conditions at Jefferson Davis Hospital in the early 1960’s, that led to the creation of the Harris County Hospital District. Mr. de Hartog’s professional papers are housed at the University of Houston M.D. Anderson Library Special Collections, ID 1967-002. A single VHS tape produced in 1993 by Baylor College of Medicine Media Productions. It measures 1.5 x 4.75 x 8 inches, has a black-and-white label, and is in good condition.

The Jane E. Johnson's Texas Children's Hospital nursing papers, 1953-1954, includes two photographs showing the new Texas Children's Hospital in 1954, a letter from 1953 confirming that Jane Johnson has been hired as a "charter member" of the nursing staff, a paper stub from 1954, and an undated news clipping mentioning the firing of staff at the hospital. The materials were donated by Jane Johnson and delivered to the archive by Brenda Thompson, a friend and, as of 2013, a member of the nursing staff at Texas Children's Hospital. The materials are in good condition, although the news clipping is showing yellowing form the acid in the paper. This collection consists of one folder.
