Menninger Collection on Psychiatry and Psychoanalysis

In June, 2003, the Houston Academy of Medicine-Texas Medical Center Library became the owner of the Menninger Foundation’s Library of Psychiatry and Psychoanalysis. This fine gift included their clinical library of books and journals, the historical and rare book collections, and complete runs of the Menninger publications. This is a wide-ranging rare book collection of more than 3000 titles pertaining to psychology, psychiatry, and psychoanalysis in both adults and children. The publications by and commentaries about Sigmund Freud are extensive. There are also a number of titles devoted to community mental health, nursing, and work in prisons. The collection includes a large number of early journals on psychoanalysis, hundreds of German psychiatric texts, and annual reports from American asylums. In addition to psychiatric materials, there are many fine texts related to the broader field of medicine. One of these volumes is a 1783 German edition of Andreas Vesalius’s anatomy with reproductions of the illustrations from the original Vesalius.

Burbank-Fraser Collection on Arthritis, Rheumatism and Gout

The Burbank/Fraser Collection contains over 3,600 volumes, including books, pamphlets, bound reprints, and translations. With publications ranging from a sixteenth century manuscript to the modern works of John Talbott and Charles Short, this collection documents the changing regimens for rheumatic diseases and the foundations of the modern specialty of rheumatology. With publications from over 20 countries, the collection offers innumerable opportunities for research on the history of the rheumatic diseases and the cross-cultural transference of medical information. The collection equals 337.4 linear with titles that date from 15th Century to the early 20th Century.

Cora and Webb Mading Collection on Public Health

The Cora and Webb Mading Collection focuses on public health and contains over 1,500 books and pamphlets on urban sanitation in the United States and communicable diseases. Two important aspects of the collection are the large number of early twentieth century city and state health department reports and the nineteenth century pamphlets on specific contagious diseases.

McGovern Collection on the History of Medicine

The McGovern Collection contains over 5,500 titles focused on the development of the medical specialties in the late nineteenth century and early twentieth. There are significant sections on pediatrics, allergy and cardiology. The collection emphasis has been American Imprints and English language materials. There are a small number of titles in French or German from the eighteenth century. The Collection holds several early anatomical texts, including a first edition of Vesalius’ Anatomica. A special section of the McGovern Collection is devoted to the works of Sir William Osler. The collection holds copies of all of Sir William’s writings, most in various editions. There is also a considerable holding of Osleriana, including the annual meetings of the American Osler Society. All items in the McGovern Collection are cataloged in the Library’s online catalog. Some items have been digitized and are available electronically through the Digital Commons@TMC. Making our resources available online is an ongoing project. More books will be available in the future.

Francis Catlin was born on December 6, 1925 in Hartford, Connecticut. He received his Doctor of Medicine degree in 1948 from Johns Hopkins University, where he also served two residencies in otolaryngology and. Dr. Catlin served in the U.S. Air Force Medical Corps from 1950-1952 at the rank of Captain and was the Assistant Chief of E.N.T. Service, U.S. Air Force, 1100th Medical Group, Bolling Air Force Base in Washington, D.C. Dr. Catlin taught and conducted research as a faculty member at Johns Hopkins from 1955-1972. There, he was a part of the Department of Otolaryngology in the School of Medicine, the School of Public Health and Hygiene’s Environmental Medicine Department, and the Public Administration. In 1972 Dr. Catlin and his family moved to Houston, Texas, where he accepted the appointments: as Professor at the Baylor College of Medicine in the Department of Otorhinolaryngology; as Chief-of-Service in the department of Otolaryngology at St. Luke’s Episcopal the and Texas Children’s Hospitals; and as the Director of the Speech, Language, and Learning Disorders at the Texas Children’s Hospital. San Jacinto Lung Association records

The San Jacinto Lung Association records include correspondence, legal documents, budgets, tuberculosis statistics, committee reports and minutes, printed materials, scrapbooks, articles, christmas seals, and photographs that document the history, community services, staff and administration of the San Jacinto Lung Association. Most notably, the collection highlights the organization’s public health programs to prevent and control tuberculosis as well as its Christmas Seal fundraising campaigns.

The materials are arranged in three series: Organization Records (1911-1993), Photographs (1895-1969), and Scrapbooks (1924-1974). The collection equals 13 cubic feet (12 document and oversize boxes).The materials are in fair condition. Some items were damaged or lost during the flood caused by Tropical Storm Allison in 2001.

Dr. Ruiz was the Chief of Ophthalmology at Hermann Hospital who built up and improved the teaching faculty at Hermann Hospital and the one with the vision for the Hermann Eye Center and made it possible. Dr. Ruiz donated his collection of journal articles, newspaper articles, business correspondence, photographs, architectural blueprints, and a scrapbook to the John P. McGovern Historical Collections and Research Center. The collection consists of 2 cubic feet (three boxes) and is collection MS 150.

United States Strategic Bombing Survey: Atomic Bombs, Japan's Struggle to End the War

The United States Strategic Bombing Survey consists of two pamphlets published in 1946 by the United States government’s Strategic Bombing Survey. There are two titles in the collection: “The Effects of the Atomic Bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki” published 30 June, 1946 and “Japan’s Struggle to End the War” published 1 July, 1946. Both publications are important to understanding some aspects of the Atomic Bomb Casualty Commission. Both pamphlets are fairly good shape although the acidic paper has lost flexibility.

The Robert W. Miller, MD, papers, MS 101, includes materials from 1953 through 1998 related to the Atomic Bomb Casualty Commission (ABCC) and the Radiation Effects Research Foundation (RERF). Miller was the chief pediatric physician on the team that conducted the research and observations in Hiroshima. This collection encompasses this period of time in Dr. Miller's career, as well as scholarly work relating to the results of the ABCC's research. Dr. Miller donated his collection of personal and business correspondence, journal articles, book reviews, business reports, newspaper articles, pamphlets, and a book to the John P. McGovern Historical Collections and Research Center between 1994 and 1998. The materials are in good condition. The collection is 0.5 cubic feet (one box).

This collection contains four series: I. Biographical; II. Correspondence; III. Publications; and IV. Ephemera. This collection contains many journal articles that analyze the results of the research collected by the ABCC. One of the highlights of this collection is the personal letters written by Dr. Miller to his family during his time in Hiroshima, which gives a glimpse into the day to day life of the time.
