Biographical history

Tina Engdahl Bangs was born December 31, 1915 in Spokane, Washington and died in Houston on September 21, 1999. John Leslie “Jack” Bangs was born September 3, 1913 in Minot, North Dakota and died May 2, 1971. Jack served in the Navy during World War II; they are both buried in the Houston National Cemetery. They were recruited to Houston in 1951 to open a speech and hearing clinic in space donated by Methodist Hospital. The new building for the Houston Speech and Hearing Center Clinical Services opened in 1959 and was tripled in size in 1969 by the addition of a research building.

The Jack Bangs, PhD and Tina Bangs, PhD papers contain charter, by-laws, amendments, correspondence, board minutes, programs and newsletters for the Speech and Hearing Institute, its merger with University of Texas. Collection contains correspondence related to the merger. Collection also contains annual reports, program documents, published and unpublished material, miscellaneous brochures and material from other speech and hearing centers, biographical information, committee books and oversized material related Jack and Tina Bangs and their work at the Speech and Hearing Institute.

The materials in the Bangs Collection were left in original order according to a letter dated Nov. 9, 1984, from archivist Randy J. Sparks to Dr. Tina E. Bangs, but were moved from two large Hollinger boxes and placed into 6 smaller boxes which occupy 2-1/2 linear feet.

Immediate source of acquisition

Correspondence indicates that Dr. Tina Bangs collection materials in September 1984. Control folder contains a thank-you letter dated September 5, 1984.

  • Processing information: Staples were removed. When necessary to help retain original order, the materials were interleaved with archival bond or put into L-velopes. Correspondence and reports on acidic paper were copied onto archival bond and discarded. Legal documents folded and housed in letter-sized folders were unfolded and the letter-sized folders replaced with identically numbered legal folders.
