The Philip S. Hench, MD, papers (MS 076) is 100 cubic feet of papers, correspondence, reprints, research documents, newspaper articles, photographs, glass slides, sheet music, and audiovisual materials. The collection contains Dr. Hench's personal and professional documents from his childhood, 1896, to his death, 1965. These papers provide information about his family and life, including his service in World War II, his contributions to medical research in rheumatic diseases, his Nobel Award and other awards. Dr. Hench, a co-developer of cortisone as a anti-inflammatory treatment for rheumatoid arthritis, was a joint winner of the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1950.

Most of the material is in English; however, some correspondence, reprints, and news articles are in Spanish, French, Italian, Norwegian or German. Much of the documentation connected to the Nobel Prize is in Norwegian. The collection consists 192 boxes, 2 oversize boxes, 2 boxes of phonographic discs, a 16mm film, and a large-format poster stored in the map cases. The materials are in good condition. Many of the phonographic discs have been digitized.

(0:20) Don Macon introduces the Video Profiles series and Dr. R. Wayne Rundles, Professor of Medicine and Head of Hematology and Chemotherapy at Duke University School of Medicine. At the time of the interview, he is also serving as President of the American Cancer Society.
(1:08) Rundles offers some details of his biography, beginning in Urbana, Illinois. He speaks about his father, the family farm, and his family. He mentions attending Depauw University in Indiana and elaborates on his interest in science.
(3:31) He speaks about his decision to go to Duke University. He mentions a fellowship to study neuroanatomy at Cornell for four years. He speaks fondly of the faculty he encountered, including B. F. Kingsbury and James Sumner. From there he reports on the connection to Duke and his decision to enroll in medical school there.
(4:53) Returning to his time at Depauw, he recounts an opportunity to work at the Woods Hole Marine Biologic Laboratory.
(6:06) Focusing on Duke, Macon notes that Rundles had a been a classmate of Grant Taylor. They speak about the dog surgery class and the tendency of students to rescue dogs.

The Reginald Burbank, MD papers (MS218) is 2.5 cubic feet and consists of 5 documents boxes. Dr. Burbank’s papers include institutional publications, medical research, translations, books, pamphlets, correspondence, letters, newspaper clippings, typed manuscripts, typed manuscripts (drafts), and medical journals that document his research and career. Dr. Burbank had a vast collection of historical manuscripts and books related to the study and history of gout, rheumatism, and arthritis. He studied as well as helped to translate these texts to support his own research findings and to assist future researchers. Items relating to these endeavors are within the collection. The materials are in relatively good condition.

The Burbank/Fraser Collection contains over 3,600 volumes, including books, pamphlets, bound reprints, and translations. With publications ranging from a sixteenth century manuscript to the modern works of John Talbott and Charles Short, this collection documents the changing regimens for rheumatic diseases and the foundations of the modern specialty of rheumatology. With publications from over 20 countries, the collection offers innumerable opportunities for research on the history of the rheumatic diseases and the cross-cultural transference of medical information. The collection equals 337.4 linear with titles that date from 15th Century to the early 20th Century.
